PhD scholarship in Machine Learning for Real-Time Radiation Measurements – DTU Compute
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Be the First to Apply
Job Description
Do you want to use your machine learning skills to develop the next generation of radiation measurement devices, e.g. for clinical use?
As our new PhD Student you will be part of a bigger project that focuses on advancing radiation detection technologies using neural based signal processing, high resolution X- and Gamma imaging detectors, and real-time radiation measurements. Our goal is to develop advanced radiation detection systems that can accurately and precisely detect and localize radiation sources with high spatial resolution and sensitivity. We aim to utilize AI-powered radiation sensor readout electronics to significantly enhance the speed and accuracy of radiation measurements. Our work will have significant applications in various fields, including nuclear medicine, space science, and ionizing radiation safety.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The main challenge you should solve is that current radiation detection systems are inherently not suitable for real-time data processing and rely on separate hardware. This makes data transfer a bottleneck that prevents real-time usage. We hypothesize that a well-trained pruned neural network can satisfy these needs.
Your main responsibility will be to develop a ML-based pipeline suitable for real-time radiation detection and classification. This will integrate existing theoretical models into the training algorithms to provide physics-guided data-driven models. Since real data is limited, due to the excessive cost of vast data collection, you should also develop suitable data augmentation techniques (or similar) relying on the available physics-model.
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education .
Assessment
The assessment of the candidates will be made by professor Søren Hauberg.
