Working in the Primrose Unit, Bedford hospital to perform the taking of blood samples by venepuncture and/or capillary technique Interpretation of test request data in order to correctly select sample tube and degree of prioritisation.Main duties of the job1 To work as a member of the Primrose Unit which will entail working in a flexible, supportive manner.2 To undertake collection of blood samples for oncology patients under the care of the Primrose Unit.4 To be able to request blood tests on Trust Pathology System- ICE5 Use of personal judgement when selecting a suitable vein for the venepuncture whilst acting within the Trust Phlebotomy policy6 Take the consent of patients having to have a blood test and act in accordance with their wishes wherever possible.About usBedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. recommended number of venepunctures on a patient on any single occasion referring to senior colleagues or clinicians for assistance when appropriate11 Comply with all Infection Control procedures and refer to more senior staff when unsure of procedure.12 Refer to qualified nursing and or medical staff when unable to select a suitable site for venepuncture on any particular patient.13 Attend to minor emergencies that may occur as a result of the phlebotomy procedure by reassuring the patient and summoning appropriate help if needed.14 Be able to respond in a calm and professional manner to the angry and/or abusive patient and to refer to the nurse in charge if unable to resolve the difficulty.15 To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives referring them to the nurses regarding their care, treatment and discharge process.16 To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team throughout the Primrose Unit and Trust17 To report to nurse in Charge incidents/ accidents to staff, patients and visitors.18 To report to any defective or faulty equipment to Nurse In Charge as appropriate19 To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Primrose Unit.20 To maintain and up-date own development and attend trust mandatory training and participate fully in individual performance review and objective setting process of the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.21 To attend and contribute regularly to Primrose Unit meetings22 To be aware of current issues and policies within the Trust and the Primrose Unit23 To take part in the
