Job Summary
The School of Community and Regional Planning invites applications for a Planning Analyst/Researcher with the Virtual Infrastructure Systems Simulation (VISION) project. This project is an innovative 3-year collaboration between Infrastructure Canada (INFC) and the Urban Predictive Analytics Lab (UPAL) at UBC. The overall goal is to provide expert advice and develop state-of-art decision support systems to assist INFC in long-term strategic planning of infrastructure assets as part of Canada’s first National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA).
Organizational Status
All duties and responsibilities shall be carried out under the direction of your supervisor, Dr. Martino Tran. Performance of assigned duties and responsibilities shall be subject to periodic evaluation by your supervisor. All effort will be made to align your core research, technical and planning interests with relevant project deliverables, project communication and stakeholder engagement.
Work Performed
This position performs complex research, analytical and technical tasks requiring a good knowledge of the procedures in the lab gained through experience. The successful applicant will be a core member of the Virtual Infrastructure Systems Simulation (VISION) project team based in the Urban Predictive Analytics Lab (UPAL) at UBC. The incumbent will be involved in all aspects of the design, implementation and communication of various deliverables.
The incumbent will be expected to actively participate in other active lab projects and research that helps advance the work of the Urban Predictive Analytics Lab, including building a positive and collaborative work environment.
Where relevant, the incumbent is expected to lead and co-author academic publications with Dr. Tran and other lab members. Resources are available to support participation in stakeholder engagement, conference attendance, skills training and academic journal publication.
Typical Duties
- Plans and performs experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques; troubleshoots problems; collects, records, analyses and interprets experiment results.
- Researches, coordinates and performs regular analysis for the research project.
- Assists senior level staff with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques for the project.
- Writes reports, presents research results at laboratory meetings and assists with the writing of grant applications.
- Sets up, maintains, provides supplies, tests and participates in experiment development for the project
- Provides training to undergraduate students, new and lower level technicians in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
- Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
- Sets up, tests, operates and maintains common laboratory and other equipment.
- May assist in running a laboratory, performing tasks, such as, purchasing supplies and minor equipment and maintaining parts of accounts.
- May oversee and direct the work of one or two incumbents in lower level classifications.
- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
While the work may be of a complex nature, tasks are assigned by the supervisor and the incumbent plans and schedules their own work. The ability to work independently and as a team member is essential to meet deadlines and complete technical tasks, specifically the project deliverables as required by partners and stakeholders including academia, government and industry.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.
Supervision Given
May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a master’s degree, preferably in planning or other related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Exceptional writing and communication skills
- Experience with programming/coding, data analysis and synthesis
