This position is located in the Middle East Division under the Regional Structure of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Department of Peace Operations (DPO). Under the overall supervision of the Director and Deputy Director of the Middle East Division, and functioning in cooperation with the North Africa Division, the Political Affairs Officer will report to the Middle East Team Leader.ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Reviews and monitors activities within the Middle East and North Africa; assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues on regional peacekeeping operations and concerned peacebuilding operations; • Analyses political and related events within the Middle East and North Africa with a view to provide early warning advice to Senior Managers; • Prepares analytical reports and papers on related matters to the General Assembly, Security Council, or other bodies as needed; • Acts as focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues on the near and medium-term operational implications for peacekeeping operations and special political missions of recent and ongoing national political and security transformations within the Middle East and North Africa; • Conducts in-depth research and extensive consultations on Middle East and North Africa region; • Meets with operational teams including UN staff, national officials, and Military and Civilian Police officers to assist with review of project planning in the context of the regional situation; • Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters within the Middle East and North Africa; • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments in order to support the Middle East Division on coordination and policy matters; brief representatives and provide, as appropriate, suggestions and recommendations; • Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise; • Performs other related duties as required.CompetenciesPROFESSIONALISM – Knowledge of the work of the United Nations or similar international organizations related to the Middle East and North Africa region. For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Fluency in Arabic is required.   • This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2025, with possibility of extension, subject to funding.
