About Our Research

RCSI recognises that excellence in research is critical to the quality of its educational activities, its credibility, and, overall, to its mission to enhance human health. RCSI’s research strategy aims to build upon its strength in translational biomedical and clinical research to deliver transformational, high impact changes in health care. Forging increased collaboration between RCSI PIs and industry is of critical importance to achieving success in this area. RCSI is also committed to provide its researchers with the supports and developmental opportunities to enable them to continuously grow and support their overall career development.

Summary of Post

We will build a Single-Cell Atlas of Fusobacterium Infection and the Cellular Signalling Response in the different cell types of the tumour microenvironment infected with Fusobacterium (cancer cells, fibroblasts, immune cells, endothelial cells). Hyperplexed immunofluorescence imaging will be performed in colorectal cancer tissues using the Cell DIVE platform in Prof Prehn’s laboratory. Tissue section will be stained for Fusobacterium and 20-30 rationally-selected markers identifying the different cell types and their responses to infection (including protein markers of inflammation, apoptosis and cell death, Wnt signalling, DNA damage, and cell proliferation).

The spatial effects of infection on tumours will be evaluated in all tumour cores and in a subset of whole slide sections including cell/biomarker responses locally/distant from infection, cell interactions, immune infiltration and association with tumour vasculature. The contribution of infection associated spatial metrics to outcomes will be assessed.

Specifically, the duties of the post are:

  • Conduct individual and/or collaborative research producing excellent research outputs to the highest ethical standards in a variety of settings as outlined above.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged in for relevant research stakeholders in the appropriate form.
  • Carry out any administration/management associated with your programme of research.
  • Promoting translational research through interaction with the other team members, RCSI staff and Research Institute and other relevant bodies.
  • The candidate might be requested to assist with the supervision of graduate students and technical staff.
  • Complying with statutory legislation, RCSI and department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
  • Representing the best interests of the Department and RCSI at all times
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time
