This framework is designed to provide significant professional development opportunities to Researchers and offer the best opportunities in terms of a wider career path.Background & RoleThe School of Inclusive and Special Education is one of six schools within DCU Institute of Education and it is the only such school in an Irish university. It has a critical mass of expertise in areas of inclusive education and special education and is dedicated to supporting the rights of all children and young people to high-quality education and to learning for all. The School provides a full range of Level 9 continuing professional development programmes in inclusive and special education. It also contributes to the University’s initial teacher education programmes and taught doctorate programme. The School hosts the newly established Centre for Inclusive Pedagogy which includes a vibrant and dynamic community of educational researchers committed to conducting and sharing internationally significant research that will develop understanding of pedagogy to support the inclusion of all learners in education.This research project is supported through philanthropic funding to identify and explore the barriers and enablers to the participation of neurodivergent people in the workplace. Despite the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities over 17 years ago, neurodivergent individuals still face significant challenges when it comes to employment. To better understand the workplace experience of neurodivergent people, the current research will adopt a participatory approach, using a combination of creative and traditional research methods to consult with neurodivergent employees across workplaces in Ireland. Neuromajority employees in management and organisational roles will also be invited to contribute to the study. The findings from this research will help inform the development of good practice guidelines for workplaces, ensuring that neurodivergent employees feel included and have a sense of belonging. Including both neurodivergent employees and their employers in this research will support a broader understanding of how neuro-affirmative workplaces can be developed.The research will be led by Dr Aoife Brennan and Dr Laura Gormley from the School of Inclusive and Special Education at DCU Institute of Education, where the postdoctoral researcher will be based. The role will involve the day-to-day management, coordination, and implementation of all research components. The individual appointed to the role will join a vibrant community of researchers within the School of Inclusive and Special Education, with opportunities for professional and career development.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to the following:

  • Comprehensive review of existing literature.
  • Assist in the collection, analysis and interpretation of the qualitative and quantitative data, including the development of submission of the research ethics applications.
  • Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities, as required.
  • Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders, including staff, students, industry and academic partners/collaborators.
  • Assist in the preparation of interim and final reports.
  • Assist in the dissemination of research outcomes, including formative feedback, journal publications, and conference presentations.
  • Carry out administrative work associated with the project.

Minimum Criteria

  • A PhD in Education/Psychology/Social Science or other relevant discipline.
  • Strong research skills, and experience of working with a variety of data sources and types.
  • Experience of supporting research projects at scale.
  • Strong research and data management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional writing skills in English.

Individuals will be assessed on the following competencies:Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that disciplineUnderstanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applicationsCommunicating Research – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor studentsManaging & Leadership skills – Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate studentsEssential TrainingThe individual will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.Salary Scale: IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale – €43,908 – €56,202Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policyClosing date: Thursday, 13th June 2024Pilot Remote Working PolicyDCU is currently operating a pilotremote working policy for staff which consists of 1 day a week and 2 days a week for a period of up to 21 weeks per year.
