This framework is designed to provide significant professional development opportunities to Researchers and offer the best opportunities in terms of a wider career path.Background & RoleWe seek a postdoctoral researcher to work on an Irish Research Council-funded project focused on mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT), based on empirical data to be collected in South Africa. The context of the work is an innovative NGO sector project that is developing a hybrid primary MKT course to run alongside their after-school maths club programme. In a context ofwidespread gaps in teachers’ mathematical knowledge the study explores possibilities for improving MKT through a course that includes in-person and WhatsApp API platform-based components.Participants on the course will be primary teachers and youth facilitators leading after-school maths clubs. Data is anticipated to include participants’ WhatsApp-based responses to programme tasks, in-person task-based interviews and affective responses. The fellowship period will mostly be based in Ireland, with periods of residency in South Africa.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Literature review of mathematical knowledge for teaching in the global south
  • Data collection in South Africa
  • Data analysis
  • Taking leadership in writing up for publication, findings related to the nature of, and changes in, the mathematical knowledge for teaching and affective responses of course participants, in good quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Disseminating research findings across academic and development policy-oriented audiences
  • Independent and collaborative publication of papers is expected
  • Participation in project meetings
  • Contribution to project meetings organisation and project logistics
  • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at DCU

Qualifications and ExperienceEssential

  • Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics Education.
  • A full driving licence for local travel in South Africa for data collection will be necessary.

Desirable

  • Experience in research-informed development projects in mathematics education.
  • Independent and collaborative research experience.
  • A record of good quality peer-reviewed publications.

Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:Discipline knowledge and Research skills – Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that disciplineUnderstanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applicationsCommunicating Research – Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor studentsManaging & Leadership skills – Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate studentsEssential TrainingThe postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Ethics training as required across the partner Irish (DCU) and South African (Wits) institutions will also need to be taken.
