We are looking for a Principal Advisor Estimating to enhance our estimating capability within Rio Tinto Projects. This is a unique opportunity for a person who has previous estimating experience, preferably in mining, coupled with project controls experience.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor Estimating and Planning, and working in a collaborative and exciting environment within Rio Tinto Projects, you will:

  • Foster a relationship of trust and respect with key product group stakeholders, engineering service providers, contractors and project and services teams
  • Drive the quality of cost estimating across projects in Rio Tinto’s Copper and Diamonds Global portfolio and other underground mining estimates produced by the group
  • Review estimates provided by others at various stages of maturity including Conceptual, Order of Magnitude, Pre-Feasibility Study, Feasibility Study and Definitive Estimates and schedules, as required
  • Prepare first principles estimate for mining and construction projects
  • Provide expert advice and support where the size and complexity of project(s) is significant enough to warrant strategic leadership of the function within the owner’s team
  • Develop and improve Rio Tinto Project’s approach to estimating
  • Lead Conceptual, Order of Magnitude, Pre-Feasibility Study, Feasibility Study and Definitive Estimates and schedules, as required.

What you will bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Underground mining exposure in a Project Controls Engineering, Estimating, Mining Engineering position is preferred
  • A degree in Engineering or Quantity surveying or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating software, such as Expert Estimator, InEight Estimate is desirable
  • Analytical skills, attention to detail, problem-solving and ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to research, compare and analyse voluminous and complex management and financial information
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Excellent written and spoken verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to effectively lead small groups of people for defined periods across geographically dispersed areas

Where you’ll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
