Alongside delivering the current Local Plan, the policy team is in the midst of producing a new Local Plan – starting the process of shaping the borough for the next 15 years. The role is based in the Planning Policy Team, working alongside Development Management and the Investment Teams to shape development in the borough to ensure it meets our needs and aspirations.This role will be joining the Policy team at an instrumental moment in the development of the Plan. We are about to start our regulation 19 consultation and are preparing for submission and examination in public. This role will be crucial in helping to ensure an innovative and ambitious plan succeeds at examination.As well as developing a new Plan, the Policy Team is also involved in the pre-application process for major and other complex sites and work closely with Regeneration colleagues, the GLA and other partners to realise our vision through master planning and other delivery-focused projects. The team also has close links with services across the Council, working on joint strategies and supporting delivery to ensure the Local Plan sits at the heart of the Council’s work.The post requires an appreciation and critical understanding of planning legislation and national and regional policy; a robust understanding of the importance of stakeholder and public engagement; and the ability to manage a complex and varied array of tasks and responsibilities to drive forward key projects individually and as part of a team. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.Newham has a large housing regeneration programme that will build over 1,000 new council homes by 2022.
