  • Trade and investment, including a large programme of support for African Continental Free Trade Area
  • Trade and environment, covering areas such as green squeeze, resilient value chains, green industrial policy, and trade and environment linkages
  • International macro-economics, finance, economic transformation, and economic crises

IEDG are looking for a researcher to take leadership on key projects within our portfolio, undertaking innovative research and analysis, and influencing the international debate through public affairs activities including publications, media engagement, speaking at conferences, and providing advice to governments and business at a senior level. The postholder will also have the opportunity to develop their own research interests within the team’s broad areas of focus, including designing research projects, obtaining funding and managing resources for delivery.The Principal / Senior Research Fellow (P/SRF) will join the IEDG team to develop its work in the areas of international macro-economics. As part of his/her job, the researcher will applied economic analysis using both quantitative and qualitative methods to answer the relevant questions of the research agenda.A Principal / Senior Research Fellow at ODI will be widely recognised as an established authority in their particular research or policy field. They will have a substantial and distinctive body of research, advisory work and/or public affairs to their name, plus several years of experience in leadership positions.About the roleWe are now recruiting a P/SRF who will be tasked to develop and deliver a portfolio of work on the following areas:

  • What are appropriate monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policies for countries to transform themselves.
  • How can countries emerge from economic crises and indebtedness and get onto a path of transformative growth;
  • What is the role of difference finance streams to support economic transformation
  • What are cross cutting links between macro-economics, gender and climate finance

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Designing, fundraising for, conducting and managing high-quality, innovative projects, drawing on expertise across the institute;
  • Providing technical assistance and policy advice to senior decision-makers;
  • Participating in public affairs and representing the institute on major research and policy agendas, in line with the Institute’s overall strategy (which includes a dedicated pillar on tackling the climate, environment and biodiversity crisis).

PERSON SPECIFICATION:EssentialKnowledge and Qualifications

  • Internationally recognised expert in the above field, especially around international macro-economics from both public and private sectors
  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline, preferably a PhD or close to obtaining a PhD.
  • Extensive and deep knowledge of key issues and organisations in a relevant field.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in policy-oriented research and/or direct policy formulation at a senior level, demonstrated by a track record of influential publications and/or delivery of major policy initiatives.
  • Experience of leadership and management at senior level, in an academic or policy environment.
  • Strong track record of engagement in major global policy processes (such as United Nations, multilateral development banks or G7/G20 initiatives) and/or with politicians and top-level officials in economies at diverse levels of income.

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Capacity to write clearly and persuasively, and first-class verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated capacity for policy advisory and or public affairs work, based on a rigorous approach, and an innovative and creative communications ability.
  • Ability to translate research and policy ideas into compelling and fundable projects and initiatives.
  • Skills in negotiation, listening, communication of ideas, problem-solving, decision-making.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, providing both leadership and mentoring for less senior staff.
  • Proven organisational and time management skills, including managing a complex and varied workload.
  • Proven ability to fundraise and build up a coherent portfolio of research and advisory work.

Desirable

  • Fluency or competency in a language or languages other than English
  • Experience of working in international organisations, developing/emerging economies and in the private sector.
  • A post graduate degree on a relevant topic.
