For over 40 years the Barbican has been offering a world-class programme of unique breadth, spanning every possible creative discipline, staged in an iconic estate of globally recognised significance. Visits to the Centre total 1.8 million annually (pre-lockdown), increasing footfall to and spend within the City, particularly across the quieter weekend days.The Barbican Centre sits at the very heart of the City, both physically and metaphorically. In the rebuilding of the area post-war the Barbican stands as a symbol of the City’s optimism and courage, a site of progressive thinking that placed cultural activity and social, civic space at the centre of a new landscape. The building, however, has remained largely untouched since that time. In order to meet the expectations of our diverse and international audience and to act as a platform and a generator for world-leading creative work, we need to restore and revitalise our current buildings and bring spaces that are currently unused back to life.The bold vision of Barbican Renewal is a direct response to the City of London’s agenda of creating a more sustainable, equitable and dynamic environment. Working with colleagues across the City portfolio, our aim is to knit the Barbican back into the fabric of London, and to stand as an exemplar of generative, value-led investment.About the roleThe Project Manager will be responsible for managing various capital projects within the Renewal Programme, from inception, through design, to completion, planning and organising projects to achieve the ambitions and purpose of the Centre. BAU projects will also be delivered as part of Renewal.You will be responsible for appointing, monitoring and supervising the overall performance of consultants and contractors for major works, acting promptly in response to undue delays or negligence. You will liaise with key internal and external stakeholders and be committed to providing the highest level of service, build trusted relationships with departments across the Centre and wider City of London to ensure the smoothest possible execution of work, managing expectations and keeping disruption to the running of the Centre and its events to a minimum.The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a building-related discipline, such as architecture, building surveying, engineering, construction, project management or quantity surveying, or have equivalent experience.
