As a Pupil Support Assistant (2), you will work under the direction and supervision of a class teacher or senior member of staff to assist by supporting children and young people who have been identified as requiring additional support.You will be required to

  • support pupils/children individually or in class or in small groups in identified areas of learning and personal development.
  • contribute information to update planning and review process for individual pupils/children.
  • supervise pupil/child self-administration of medication. You will offer a high level of personal care which will enable the pupil/child to function to their full potential e.g. toileting, administrating medication in line with agreed training procedures and encouraging self- help and independence.
  • carry out support programmes designed by visiting specialists e.g. speech and language programmes, physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy programmes.
  • support pupil/child mobility (as defined by moving and handling training) on an emergency/short-term basis and for low level needs e.g. to support toileting or short-term injury such as a broken leg.

Qualification, Registration and Skill RequirementsInclude overview and link to relevant paragraphs, if applicable:

  • You are required to have good levels of interpersonal skills and abilities which will enable you to work as a member of a team to ensure positive outcomes for all children and young people.
  • Experience of supporting young people with additional support needs
  • Before confirming your appointment, you will be required to obtain Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland and become a member of the relevant PVG scheme.
  • 2 National 5’s, or 2 Standard Grades General, or 2 O Grades or equivalent (SCQF Level 4 or above
  • You must apply to register with SSSC within 3 months of taking up employment in this role (Early Learning Centres/Primary and Special schools only)and maintain your registration.
  • For Early Learning Centres/Primary and Special schools only – NC in Early Education and Childcare at SCQF Level 6 or SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF Level 6 or Professional Development Award in Education Support Assistance at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent or, a commitment to achieve in the first period of registration as required by the Employer
  • Good IT Skills
