Job description

The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a “mega project” to clean-up low-level radioactive wastes situated in the Municipality of Port Hope and the Municipality of Clarington. The project involves remediating several contaminated sites to established clean-up criteria and consolidating the wastes in a new engineered mound (one in each community). The remediation and construction aspects of the project are subject to CNSC licenses and environmental approvals. The PHAI has a very high public profile and is a top priority for the Government of Canada and the Port Hope area communities.
The project is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and led by CNL. The Government of Canada provides oversight for the execution of the project mandate.
Radiation Technicians work under the direction of the Radiation Protection Technician Supervisor and the Radiation Protection Manager to implement the CNSC approved RP Program.
What will you be doing!
- Performing contamination surveys and radiological safety assessments.
- Documenting radiological work assessments and assisting in documenting radiological work plans.
- Teaching Group 4, Group 3 and Group 2 RP (Radiation Technicians) Training for CNL staff members and CNL-hired contractors.
- Participating in accident investigations and workplace inspections; advising CNL staff and sub-contractors on RP requirements in their respective work areas.
- Performing oversight of both CNL’s and contractor’s execution of their RP Programs.
- Creation and review of highly technical standard operating procedures which RP staff will follow during their routine work.
- Overseeing dosimetry for CNL personnel and ensuring that work being executed by CNL, and its subcontractors is compliant with the requirements of the PHAI RP Plan and CNL Corporate RP program.
- Ensure sufficient supply of bioassay collection sample containers for CNL staff. Supervise the collection, packaging, and shipment of samples to laboratory.
- Respond to situations to contain/mitigate short term risk, including responding appropriately to emergency situations and conditions to ensure the radiological safety of all involved.
- Execution of workplace inspections and measurements, in performance of routine checks of all CNL RP instrumentation for function and proper response, and in sending of RP instrumentation for calibration.
- Manage radiation sources used for RP instrumentation verification. Ensure inventory is maintained, and leak testing is performed as required by the RP program and relevant CNSC regulations.
- Organize, prioritize, plan, and advise CNL staff and subcontractors of RP requirements for work.
- Assist Health Physics Lead in creating standard operating procedures for RP staff.
- Participate in incident response and investigations including but not limited to personal contamination events, loss of containment, transport accidents, medical emergencies.
- Prepare oversight reports summarizing findings against programmatic requirements.
- Responsible for meeting HWP quality requirements as defined in the HWP QA Plan and supporting procedural documents in conducting the work
- Coordinate the schedule and resourcing required for smaller scope and complexity projects in a manner that ensures consistency with established programmatic goals and requirements.
- The successful candidate must be willing to work in office, construction, and operations environments (i.e. laboratories, construction sites, demolition areas, wastewater treatment plants).
- Must possess good mobility and have the physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work, which involves standing for longer periods, climbing, bending, and lifting. Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Abilities and Skills:
Additional abilities and skills to include construction oversight, teamwork/management skills, highly developed communication skills (verbal and written).
Job/Industry Specific Knowledge:
Ideally, the RP technician comes to the role with a sound understanding of HWP MO Radiation Protection Program, Group 1 field oversight experience, training, and experience in implementation of a robust Radiation Protection Program.
Experience:
Minimum 3 years (36 months) as an RP Technician.
CNL Group 1 RP Qualification is preferred and considered an asset.
Education:
Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education in a field relevant to the position as well as a minimum of three years (36 months) relevant operational RP technician experience at an advanced Level (eg, Green Badge or CNL Group 1.
Security Clearance Requirements:
Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions:
- Must possess good mobility and have the physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work, which involves standing for longer periods, climbing, bending, and lifting. Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons.
- Willingness to be on-call, work overtime, or support shift work as required.
