The Reactor Chemistry and Corrosion Branch is seeking a R&D Technologist to provide technical (hands-on) support for a variety of R&D projects related to furthering the understanding of the degradation of materials common to the nuclear industry. The branch conducts R&D programs with a focus on corrosion and electrochemistry, radiation chemistry, process water chemistry and purification systems, corrosion product and activity transport, iodine chemistry under severe accident scenarios, and film forming product applications. To support these and other R&D programs on our site, we maintain and operate chemistry and corrosion laboratories, autoclave and loop facilities, irradiation facilities, a metallographic laboratory and a suite of modern day surface analytical instrumentation that have been modified for safe handling and analysis of radioactive materials.Specifically, a self-motivated technologist is required to perform examinations on a diverse range of highly radioactive and non-radioactive materials common to the nuclear industry using an array of standard metallographic methods. This work will require the technologist to operate/use equipment/chemicals typically employed to perform metallographic and/or component failure examinations in CRL’s Metallographic Services Laboratory. These activities will provide vital technical support to a number of direct-to-customer services, as well as externally and internally funded R&D programs. Other material science related work, as deemed necessary, may be required. Work with radiation emitting devices and radioactive samples is also required.Typical duties for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

• The execution of metallographic examinations and component failure analysis, which may include:

• Standard metallographic specimen preparation;
• Optical microscopy, photography, and image analysis; and
• Hardness measurements.
• Acquiring and interpreting of metallographic data; reporting of laboratory findings and ensuring acquired data is properly stored; and interfacing with laboratory customers.
• Maintaining and troubleshooting equipment used to perform metallographic examinations. When more advanced troubleshooting is needed, engage senior staff, or other instrument specialists for further assistance.
• Developing or assisting in the development of laboratory procedures, work plans, and job hazard assessments to ensure the continued safe operation of the laboratory.
• Safely handle hazardous chemicals, gases and radioactive materials, and employ effective radiation safety protocols as required to execute experimental work or maintenance activities.
• The successful candidate will be performing work within Class B Radioisotope Laboratories, and be handling, tracking and examining materials emitting ionizing radiation using the surface analytical instrumentation and/or metallographic laboratory techniques listed above.
• Tracking several ongoing projects in parallel, often on varied subjects.
• Interfacing with branch professional and technical staff, and internal or external collaborators and service providers (e.g., analytical chemistry, procurement, radiation protection, waste services, etc.) as required.
• The potential for the operation of multiple surface analytical instruments that may include:

• Scanning electron microscope(s) equipped with secondary electron, backscattered electron, energy dispersive X-ray, wavelength dispersive X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction detection systems
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education

• Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as metallography, physical sciences, engineering or equivalent formal education. OR
• Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
• Experience

• Preferably experience in a combination of metallography, analytical sciences and/or scientific instruments
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of and experience performing basic metallographic methods/techniques (i.e., but not limited to, sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching of metal specimens).
• Knowledge of and experience utilizing optical microscopes and image analysis software.
• Knowledge of metallurgy, materials degradation phenomena, and failure analysis.
• Any prior experience in materials science would be an asset.
• A demonstrated commitment to safety, especially when dealing with chemicals, radioactivity and energized systems.
• A proven track record for producing high quality work and the ability to communicate data through memoranda.
• The ability to work in a team environment with good oral and written communication skills is absolutely essential.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required

• Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
