The Stimson internship program offers a professional and educational experience in discovering the way in which non-profit organizations can contribute to the understanding of issues in international peace and security. The at the Henry L. Stimson Center seeks a highly motivated candidate to join the team as a full-time paid intern. The selected intern will support the Reimagining US Grand Strategy Program and its different projects in their efforts to strengthen U.S. foreign policy by testing assumptions, reassessing conventional wisdom, and exploring innovative approaches to international engagement.

The internship will be in-person and will run from March to August 2024. The intern will be paid $17 hourly and is expected to work at least 32 hours per week.

Major responsibilities

The intern’s responsibilities will focus on the areas of research, professional development, and project administration:

  • Conduct research to help draft the Strategy Program’s publications and support its activities.
  • Draft correspondence and take notes at the Program’s meetings, and public and private events.
  • Provide logistical and operational support for the Program’s events and activities.
  • Support media outreach to promote the Program’s publications and events.
  • Manage the Program’s contacts and support institutional memory.
  • Support the development of the Program, as needed, by taking part in internal discussions and by sharing innovative ideas.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student, or a recent graduate from any field, with a strong interest in U.S. foreign policy.
  • GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) scale, or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution preferred.
  • Must demonstrate proven interest in the core mission of the Stimson Center.
  • Interest in and knowledge of a range of core topics related to the Strategy Program’s themes and priorities.
  • Must possess excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Preference is given to candidates available to work at least 32 hours per week. Applicants should confirm their time commitment in their cover letter.
  • Only students legally allowed to work in the United States will be considered.

Professional Development

Applicants should be highly motivated and sincere in their desire for an internship that is challenging and professional in nature. Interns can expect close and constant interaction with program staff, including their respective program directors. The Strategy Program’s interns will also have access to the Program’s network.

The intern’s supervisors will evaluate the intern’s performance at the close of the internship. The intern will also be encouraged to evaluate the internship program at Stimson and their individual experience.

Recently, our interns have gone on to careers in the State Department, the Department of Defense, the United Nations, various think tanks, and other organizations. Others have chosen to continue their education at graduate programs, including those at Georgetown, SAIS at Johns Hopkins, etc.
