Our Chalk River location is looking for a Research and Development Scientist/Engineer to support our Inspection and Monitoring Technologies Branch. Can you see yourself in a role where you will be working alongside a team of Scientists, Engineers, and Technologists/Technicians performing work related to the inspection of steam generators, nuclear waste containers, fuel channels and feeders and other specialized component applications, with an emphasis in computer modelling, sensor design, signal analysis, and development of algorithms for signal interpretation? - Understanding customers’ needs and formulating project goals and outcomes.
- Conducting Literature and operational experience reviews, researching and developing new NDE technology, deploying existing NDE technology, and working under the supervision of more experienced staff.
- Initiating proposals, preparing work plans, conducting job hazard assessments, project management, progress reporting, and writing of reports and procedures.
- Designing and performing specialized tests, including designing and constructing experimental testing apparatuses and data acquisition equipment.
- Travelling to reactor sites for inspection campaigns as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- At minimum, a Bachelor (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
- A master’s degree or Ph.D. in engineering or sciences from a university of recognized standing or a member of a provincial professional engineering association would be considered an asset.
- Experience
- Knowledge and/or training in eddy current testing.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong mathematical skills.
- Finite element method modelling experience.
- Knowledge of electronic equipment, networking and data manipulation is desirable.
- High degree of computer literacy, including programming in different computer languages.
- Advanced knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Good communication skills and ability to deal with internal and external clients.
- A high degree of motivation and the ability to handle the competing demands of multiple assignments are essential.
- Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation, and materials and processes in general. Familiar with the components of a steam generator and a basic understanding of how a reactor operates.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Desk and computer work. Some standing, lifting less than 25 lbs.
- Office and conventional non-radiological laboratory.
- Use of standard personal protective equipment, i.e. safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hat.
- Travel to reactor sites for inspection campaigns as a Nuclear Energy Worker.

Location:
This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
