Job description

Offer Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed term full time position as a Research Assistant within the Exposure Science research group in the School of Natural Science at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and is available from May 1st until 15th July 2024.

Project background:

Ireland is faced with a significant challenge to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings by meeting higher energy performance standards and by increasing energy retrofit activity. This will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and also improve our living standards as buildings become more comfortable, healthier and less costly to heat. As we strive towards a more energy efficient society, we need to understand the impact that energy efficient renovations have on indoor air quality, so that we can evaluate the impact on health and healthcare and non-healthcare costs. The Government of Ireland has committed to supporting up to 500,000 energy upgrades in the domestic sector over the next decade in Irelands Climate Action plan (2023). This research project, Health Impact Assessment of Deep Energy Renovations on Irish Domestic Dwellings – HAVEN, will investigate the health impacts and conduct a health economic evaluation of energy retrofits in domestic dwellings. The project team are now recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher to assist with the completion of the study.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing health questionnaire data collected from project participants who have had an energy renovation. They will also be required to assist with the analysis of indoor air quality data for the purposes of completing a health impact assessment. The successful candidate may also be required to assist with project outreach activities and preparation of project data for presentation at scientific conferences and to non-scientific audiences.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Provision of administrative and data analysis support to the research project
  • Analysing data collected in a health questionnaire to evaluate the health and health economic impacts from energy retrofits in domestic dwellings
  • Conducting quantitative data analysis on project questionnaire data
  • Liaising with project funding agency and stakeholders regarding project queries
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

Qualifications/Skills required:

Salary: Research assistant salary scale €30,025 – €39,908 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
