Reporting to the Manager of CFAES Northwest Agricultural Research Station, assists in providing collaborative professional services to support CFAES faculty and technical staff in the implementation of agricultural field research to meet experimental objectives, primarily agronomic crops (corn, soybeans, and small grains). This position works directly with investigators and staff to implement projects following research procedures. Assists with instruction of student and seasonal employees on field operations to carry out crop research. Lays out field plots, performs tillage, planting, installs and manages irrigation systems, harvests and performs other agricultural operations according to the project protocols. Operates, calibrates, adjusts, services and repairs farm machinery and specialized agricultural research equipment. Transports equipment to other field sites using truck and trailer. Operates and programs GPS controlled sprayers, computer-controlled grain harvesting and sampling equipment, and RTK guidance software systems. Applies agricultural chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, soil amendments, and experimental treatments according to project protocols. Collects grain yields, samples and growth parameter data on researchers behalf. Maintains detailed field, pesticide, fertilizer and operations records. Expected to perform work in alignment with college and university safety procedures. Attends university and department trainings. Assists with supply procurement, grounds maintenance, facility cleaning and repairs. Assists with field days and other public events. May work at other research locations or with other CFAES farm units as requested; works adjusted schedules according to weather, soil and crop conditions. Position is located in Custar, Ohio.
Minimum Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be required. Associate degree in relevant field may be preferred. 2 years of relevant experience required. 4-6 years of relevant experience preferred.
Required Experience: Minimum two years of experience in crop production practices. Proficient skills with operation and repair of farm machinery. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with precision agriculture and RTK guidance technology. Ability to operate/program GPS control systems. Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a team work environment. Physical ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical work for extended periods.
Desired Experience: Possess or ability to acquire Commercial Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of employment. Commercial Drives License preferred, but not required.
