Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £35,880 to £45,163 with potential progression once in post to £47,874Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to September 2027BackgroundThe post-holder will work in the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU), which improves surgical outcomes thorough collaborative research.This post is part of a new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded grant to deliver research activities to make surgery in the NHS more sustainable.Led by Prof. Aneel Bhangu, NIHR Group on Carbon Reduced Operating Theatres is a 4 year project led by the University of Birmingham in collaboration with colleagues from across the UK.Operating theatres contribute one quarter of a hospital’s carbon footprint. The UK government wants the NHS to reach a “net-zero” carbon footprint by 2045. This cannot happen without patients and researchers working together to make surgery environmentally friendly. However, it is challenging to change behaviours of staff in theatres, largely because of safety concerns. This programme will be a major step towards safely introducing net-zero healthcare. It will create new knowledge that can be shared across the NHS.Main Duties

  • Work with the principal investigator (Prof Bhangu), research team, and relevant collaborators to develop research objectives, study designs, and research protocols
  • Carrying out targeted literature reviews
  • Work across three core pillars of research activity, as outlined in the grant
  • Support cross-cutting themes such as health economics and PPI
  • Support the development of clinical trial documentation
  • Analyse and interpret data, using quantitative and/or qualitative techniques, applying knowledge in a way that develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, conferences, research seminars and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Contribute to Unit/Institute research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of benefit to the College and the University

Person Specification

  • Medical degree, with experience in surgery which can be applied to research
  • An understanding of clinical trials, with particular reference to surgical trials
  • A record of research output, appropriate to career stage, with potential to publish in leading international journals
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Strong organisational skills and developing managerial capabilities
  • Experience of developing new research ideas, with an aptitude for developing new models and methodologies that will advance discipline
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and develop networks with non-academic organisations
  • A willingness to undertake training and play a full role in the project team and wider research environment
