Post Summary
The School of Law, Trinity College Dublin, invites applications for a prestigious European Research Council-funded post for a Research Fellow. This role will be of interest to graduates of social sciences, socio-legal studies, law (particularly human rights law), and psychology (and related disciplines), with skills in empirical research.
POIRE (Prison Oversight: Improving Rights in Europe) is a research project funded by the European Research Council’s Proof of Concept Scheme. The postdoctoral research fellow will work on a ground-breaking study on the protection of rights in prison through international monitoring. The project seeks to bring research directly to policy and practice with a view to creating a training and support programme for people in prison, prison staff and prison administrators. The researcher will be given support and mentoring to develop their skills and manage their career development. The ideal start date is March 2024.
The PI on this project is Dr. Mary Rogan, Associate Professor, School of Law.

Background to the project
POIRE: Prison Oversight: Improving Rights in Europe is a project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), grant agreement 101069413. POIRE seeks to engage in research, training and support concerning people in prison, prison staff and prison administrators on visits from the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Ill-Treatment (CPT) – an international prison monitoring body. POIRE will engage in research, with a strong focus on providing training and support, and evaluating its programmes. POIRE seeks to provide the foundation for a not-for-profit enterprise which works to promote engagement with prison monitoring and rights protection mechanisms. POIRE is based on the PRILA project, (Prisons: the rule of law, accountability and rights) previously funded by the ERC.
POIRE is seeking a full-time postdoctoral research fellow to work on a research project in the thematic area detailed below. The postdoctoral researcher will gain skills in qualitative and quantitative research, applied research, training and support activities, consultancy, networking, and presenting their research to academic, policymaking and public audiences. POIRE researchers will be uniquely positioned for careers in academia, policy, the NGO sector, international human rights, as well as law and criminal justice practice.
Please note that Garda vetting will be sought in respect of individuals who come under consideration for a post.
