The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery hosts the longest running annual international nursing and midwifery education and research conference in Europe, which is now in its 43rd year.Job Summary:The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join our dynamic team. The successful applicant will be the main researcher for NIHR WEATHER project and will be involved in the collection and analysis of data, drafting publications and taking part in knowledge exchange and dissemination activities.Warning system for Extreme weather events, Awareness Technology for Healthcare, Equitable delivery, and Resilience (WEATHER) Project Aim: Develop an early warning system for extreme weather such as flooding in two vulnerable districts; eThekwini and Ugu districts of KZN province, South Africa. Firstly, the study will assess the relationship between extreme weather and health risk due to contamination of water, and associated disease outbreaks. Secondly, disease predictive modelling will be investigated. Lastly, a warning system to improve communication between affected communities and central healthcare providers will be developed from existing mobile phone platforms combined with predictive technology.Background: Weather patterns in KZN province are less predictable due to climate change causing significant disruption in communication, severe flood damage, limited access to safe, clean drinking water and infectious disease outbreaks causing deaths. A predictive warning system would assist communities/ health systems to prepare/ manage risk during weather-related flooding.Impact: Capacity building is vital for research succession and the project integrates two PhD’s: one in health economics as no expertise in this discipline exists in the University of KwaZulu-Natal and one in AI technology. The predictive warning system will deliver value for money, enhancing communication, resource allocation, predict disease outbreaks, improving healthcare service delivery during flooding. Strong local partnerships with academics, clinicians and policymakers within SA will ensure that this research is disseminated widely and transferrable to other regions of the African sub-continent with similar weather events.Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct individual and/or collaborative research producing excellent research outputs to the highest ethical standards in a variety of settings as outlined above.
- Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged in for relevant research stakeholders in the appropriate form.
- Carry out any administration/management associated with your programme of research.
- Promoting translational research through interaction with the other team members, RCSI staff and Research Institute and other relevant bodies.
- The candidate might be requested to assist with the supervision of graduate students and technical staff.
- Complying with statutory legislation, RCSI and department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
- Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
- Representing the best interests of the Department and RCSI at all times
- Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time.
1. Project Management:
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of relevant research projects and tenders, from initiation to completion.
- Develop project plans, timelines, and budgets in collaboration with the Executive Vice Dean for Research.
- Coordinate project activities, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Monitor progress, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and regulatory requirements.
2. Research and Data Analysis:
- Conduct literature reviews and data analysis to support research projects.
- Collaborate with faculty members and researchers to collect and analyse research data.
- Assist in the preparation of research publications, reports, and presentations.
- Stay up-to-date with developments in nursing and midwifery research.
***3.***Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with the Executive Vice Dean for Research and other team members to foster a collaborative research environment.
- Communicate research progress and findings effectively through written reports and presentations.
- Collaborate with external stakeholders, including government agencies, healthcare organisations, and industry partners.
Essential criteria:
- PhD, or equivalent professional qualification and experience in health/public health/social science/health economics research.
- Previous experience of working on health-related studies utilising qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques is essential.
- Excellent organisational, communication and computing skills, and must have experience of effectively working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Proven skills in preparing research reports and outputs for user audiences.
- Experience of organising events for impact and/or dissemination purposes
- Strong research and analytical skills, with a track record of academic or research achievements.
- Proficiency in grant and tender proposal writing.
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of conduction systematic, scoping and rapid reviews.
- Experience of conducting health economic evaluations e.g. Social Return on Investment (SROI)/ Contingent Valuation for public health interventions.
- Experience in realist evaluation/process evaluation
- Competence in statistical analysis/modelling is desirable.
- Experience of supervising and supporting junior researchers and/or research degree students, and non-academic staff.
- Project management experience.
