This framework is designed to provide significant professional development opportunities to Researchers and offer the best opportunities in terms of a wider career path.Background & RoleThe Brexit Institute is a research and policy centre established in DCU in 2017. The Institute ( ) is Europe’s first and Ireland’s only centre created to focus on Brexit-the United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union- and the future of Europe. The Institute operates as a hub and magnet to explore the implications that Brexit produces on law, politics, the economy and society at large. The Institute is led by Federico Fabbrini (Professor of European Law), has a full time, international team of researchers, visiting fellows and interns, and connects broadly staff from across DCU Schools and Faculties working on Brexit-related issues. The Institute regularly organises high-level events, including workshops, training seminars, conferences and briefings; it engages with government, civil society and business; and it produces research and policy on a topic of great societal relevance. The Brexit Institute has been running several research projects funded by the EU Erasmus+ program. From 2019 to 2022 it led the Jean Monnet Network BRIDGE (Brexit Research an Interchange into Differentiated Governance in Europe: ); since 2022 it houses the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence REBUILD (Recovery of Europe, Budget of the Union: Integration, Law & Democracy: ); and starting in 2025, it will coordinate the 12-partners Jean Monnet Network PROSPER (Project to Research Opportunities for Strengthening Prosperity & Economic Resilience in the EU).The DCU Brexit Institute intends to appoint a full-time Research Fellow with expertise in the field of EU law and politics, to work inter alia in the framework of the PROSPER project. It is envisaged that this appointment will commence in January 2025 or shortly thereafter. The contract will be for a fixed-term period corresponding to the duration of the PROSPER project.The selected candidate will work under the leadership and direction of Federico Fabbrini (Full Professor of European Law, Director of the Brexit Institute and PI of the PROSPER project) and contribute to the development of the DCU Brexit Institute and its activities.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Undertaking academic research in the area of EU law and politics, including Brexit and the future of Europe, and EU economic competitiveness and resilience.
  • Delivering scientific publications in this field, including blogs, working papers, events’ reports and journal articles, and policy briefs, on a regular basis.
  • Contribute to teaching at University level, including by taking up responsibility for the full delivery of specific modules in the field of EU institutions and the law and politics of Brexit, including the marking of exams and the corresponding administrative obligations, for a maximum of two modules per academic year.
  • Contribute to the research programme of the PROSPER project, in particular by aiding in the scientific organization of the project’s conferences, fostering the interchange between the main research streams of the project, drafting reports, recording podcasts, and promoting the dissemination of the research outcomes to the broader public.
  • Contribute to the organization of academic and policy seminars and workshops.
  • Contribute to fundraising, including by applying for new externally funded grants.
  • Participate in the production of project related deliverables on time and in full.
  • Develop or contribute to research proposals in line with research programme in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
  • Lead and collaborate in the production of dissemination material and results of the research (i.e. high quality scientific publications, reports) in which you are engaged, with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator;
  • Carry out administrative work associated with the programme as necessary.

Minimum CriteriaApplicants should have a PhD in EU law or political science and a minimum of 4 years postdoctoral research experience or equivalent at Level 2 of the Research Career Framework.In addition, it is essential that the candidate has a successful track-record of applying for, and winning, funding under the Jean Monnet Action programme and experience in the management of EU-funded research projects.Candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:
Discipline Knowledge & Research skills -Demonstrates the ability to design and/or implement a substantial programme of research including initiating and leading new research programmes (for example by using critical judgement and an understanding of new research methodologies).Understanding the Research Environment – Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the research environment both nationally and internationally, the ability to secure significant research funding and where relevant the ability to apply for intellectual property rights and/or patents for their research.Communicating Research – Demonstrates excellence in communicating their research nationally and internationally (for example by publishing in high quality peer reviewed journals of international standing and through invitation to participate in commercial research) and the ability to deliver teaching based on their own research.Managing & Leadership skills – Successfully leads and manages research programmes including the management and supervision of a small research team and the financial management of research programmes.Essential TrainingThe postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training.
