Job title:

Research Fellow in Fundamental Protein Metrology using Cyclic Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry

Company

University College London

Job description

About usBiosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students. This is an exciting opportunity to join the lab of Prof. Konstantinos Thalassinos at UCL.About the roleProteins are dynamic and complex biomolecules, and their precise measurement is vital in sectors like food, health, and biopharma. Accurate and consistent protein measurements depend on understanding protein structures, their interactions, and how these relate to function. The metrology community has only recently started focusing on the challenging task of measuring proteins’ higher-order structures, especially given the complexity of defining what exactly is being measured due to the variety of techniques used.UCL is part of a large European network aiming to develop strategies to better understand the impact of protein structure on measurement and function. This project will also establish a metrology framework that more clearly defines the protein measurand, analytical targets, and their influence on measurement uncertainty. These advancements will support the metrology community across Europe and align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goal for good health and well-being.At UCL, we will primarily use cyclic ion mobility mass spectrometry (cyclic IMS) and to a lesser extent crosslinking mass spectrometry (XL-MS) to achieve these objectives. The post holder will be responsible for conducting detailed and precise measurements on proteins using cyclic IMS and XL-MS, as well as developing robust and repeatable protocols. This position is ideal for someone with experience in cyclic IMS and a strong interest in characterising higher-order protein structures. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others are essential.Interview Date(s) are scheduled for: October 2024.This is an open ended contract with the end date of October 2025, in the first instance.Research Fellows – ‘Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £34,502 – £36,348 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.’This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 80% on site. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit for more information.A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page.If you have any queries about the role, please contact Prof. Konstantinos Thalassinos at .If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online or have any queries about the application process, please contact Biosciences staffing at [email protected].About youWe are seeking a highly motivated person to join the team. Your expertise will ensure the efficient operation of state-of-the-art instrumentation, enabling high-quality data generation and analysis in a collaborative and innovative environment. To excel in this role, you must be adaptable, quick to assimilate new information, and capable of establishing links across the EU collaborative network. An excellent eye for detail, strong organisational skills, effective communication, and patience are essential. Analysis of proteins using mass spectrometry techniques is essential. You must have a PhD in mass spectrometry, or relevant subject area and proven knowledge of the theory and applications of mass and ion mobility mass spectrometry.Experience in using the cyclic ion mobility mass spectrometer is also essential. What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

  • 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
  • Additional 5 days’ annual leave purchase scheme
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
