The Research Scientists will work closely with the Emergency Medicine Research Group (EMeRG), the EMeRG Director, as well as the Chair in the DEM to contribute to the research and educational activities of the EMeRG and DEM. The EMeRG Director’s research program contains a portfolio of national and international projects spanning a number of cardio-respiratory, neurological, and injury conditions, methodological as well as applied research studies including collaborations with colleagues at research institutions in Canada, Europe, United Kingdom and the United States.PositionThe Research Scientists will lead clinical research activities at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) Emergency Department (1 position) or the Misericordia Community Hospital (MCH) Emergency Department (1 position) that contribute to the local, national and international reputation of the DEM.Specific Responsibilities of the Research Scientist will be as follows:Training and Capacity Development:
- Supervise summer research students, residents and/or graduate students;
- Assist in the development and delivery of curriculum for research training (e.g., Evidence Based Medicine curriculum) of students and residents;
- Assist with and attend Journal Club activities for Residency Program;
- Supervise Research Assistants hired through research funds held in the Research Scientist’s name;
- Oversee junior staff performing data collection, data management and statistical analyses; provide interpretation of the results of statistical analyses;
- Contribute directly to, and supervises junior Research Assistants in the development of case report forms and other study materials (e.g., consent forms, information sheets);
- Contribute directly to, and supervises junior Research Staff in, contributing to the Emergency Medicine Resident Research Training program;
- Supervise Research Assistants and junior research staff in the development of protocols, ethics submissions, and reviews for DEM research studies;
- Provide research support and mentorship to the Emergency Medicine undergraduate and graduate students.
Knowledge Creation:
- Develop an independent program of research in clinical research/quality assurance at their respective hospitals
- Set research portfolio objectives, implementation strategies and monitoring activities;
- Plan research activities and provide research design for various projects and their research program. Determine the most appropriate methodology in conducting identified research goals. Design data collection protocols and standard operating procedures. Supervise data collection activities;
- Prepare proposals for new research projects, including assisting in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals;
- Hold and responsibly manage research funds as PI and/or co-PI/applicant, according to the funding and Institutional guidelines;
- Conduct primary and secondary (e.g., Systematic reviews, evidence synthesis) research. Oversee the analysis of research results.
- Conduct quality analysis and quality assurance on research operations, methodology, etc., and advise and/or create databases and data entry protocols; liaise with programmers and data entry clerks to ensure data quality;
- Interact with colleagues, students, and staff within the EMeRG team, the DEM, the University of Alberta and other collaborators or stakeholders to support research in emergency medicine topics;
- Liaise with local, national and international collaborators to ensure the delivery of current research programs according to their timelines, quality and budget.
Knowledge Mobilization:
- Lead manuscript/research papers/reports preparation/writing, approval, and submission;
- Lead conference presentations;
- Participate in Department of Emergency Medicine annual Research Day;
- Create and coordinate virtual and in-person workshops and committee meetings;
- Contribute to the dissemination of Departmental research activities to affiliated communities; present research results in team meetings, at seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings;
- Contribute to the annual report focused on key deliverables: knowledge generation (e.g., new primary of systematic review research); knowledge translation (e.g., presentations, publications, and social media); funding (e.g., grants and contracts); and capacity development (e.g., undergraduate students, graduate students, residents, etc.).
Service to the Department:
- Contribute as an active member of the Research Committee, Summer Studentship Series, committee membership as required, liaising with off-campus research partners.
QualificationsThe Research Scientist must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. These clinician-scientists must have completed an MD degree (or equivalent), completed training in emergency medicine (CCFP-EM or FRCP-EM), hold a clinical position as an Emergency Physician employed full-time in the Edmonton Zone at one of the two hospital s (e.g., UAH or MCH) with at least one graduate research degree (e.g., MSc/MPH; PhD; DPharm, etc.) and demonstrated experience in emergency medicine research.Additional requirements for this position are as follows:
- Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), NACTRC, and HREB training (within a year of the start of the appointment);
- Knowledge of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2018);
- Proven experience with various research methods (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods);
- Experience with working under short timelines, with proven ability to adhere to strict schedules and deadlines;
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills;
- Excellent communication (strong oral and written competence in English), interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills;
- Excellent leadership within a team environment.
