The candidate will be supporting the Federal Science and Technology program under the theme of advanced reactor systems and small modular reactors. Additionally, they will support/propose commercial contracts from industry groups and regulators.
The successful candidate will be required to contribute computational modelling expertise on contemporary and advanced fuel designs (particularly TRISO) with varying manufacturing techniques under normal and postulated transient conditions. The candidate will also develop simulations and deliver recommendations on the behaviour of various reactor components for the safety and efficiency of the current Canadian reactor fleet and proposed new reactor technology. The candidate may be tasked with supporting the design and analysis of experiments to provide data for model development and to verify predictions. The candidate will be expected to have, or acquire, the expertise and knowledge of the behaviour of conventional and advanced nuclear fuels to support the industry and the regulator in resolving technical issues.

What you will be doing:
– Develops engineering-scale multiphysics simulations of nuclear fuel and related systems including heat transport, structural deformation, chemical transport, etc.
– Exploits appropriate tools such as fuel modelling codes and/or general-purpose differential equation software (e.g.: Finite Element Method, Finite-Volume Method).
– Checks model predictions against expected behaviour and experimental data for correctness.
– Suggests new or refined models and experiments to answer key questions pertinent to stakeholders.
– Assists in the assurance of safe and efficient use of nuclear materials through mathematical and computational models.
– Communicates and disseminates generated information both internally to other groups, and externally in peer-reviewed publications and technical presentations.
– Contributes modelling expertise to internal and external customers.

What we are looking for:
– At minimum a Bachelors (Honours) in engineering or science from a university of recognized standing.
– Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters or PhD degree in engineering or applied science
– 2 years in the behaviour of nuclear fuels or nuclear materials subject to
irradiation/extreme environments.
– Demonstrated expertise in multiphysics finite-element modelling software.
– Experience developing new models, and their application of them to engineering problems.
– A strong command of the English language both written and oral is required for this position.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys working with a team of computational material science professionals and technologists. A working knowledge of the finite-element method and associated numerical techniques, and word processing and presentation software is required. Experience with phase field, crystal plasticity, fracture mechanics, thermochemistry, and surrogate modelling are considered assets.

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.
