Job Description
This position serves as support for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Science Operations Center (SOC), in the collection, processing, and analysis of Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images from the LROC instrument suite.

Essential Duties
- Produce high-resolution digital elevation models of the lunar surface using SOCET SET and SOCET GXP by BAE Systems, mapping software for photogrammetry and geospatial analysis.
- Use image processing and analysis software to assess the accuracy and quality of digital elevation models for use in navigation for upcoming lunar landings.
- Assist ShadowCam Science team members with data processing tasks, including developing new procedures, to advance research.
- Compile and distill information from ShadowCam imagery to be included in research papers, posters and talks presented at meetings.
- Support our education and public outreach efforts through events on campus, off-site, and virtually for ages preschool through adults.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Science Operations Center Manager, or Derived Data Products Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of remote sensing techniques.
- Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Evidence of effectivecommunication skills.
- Good organization and documentation skills.
- Ability to remain detail-oriented while working on large data sets.
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems and develop mitigation procedures.
- Experience performing or aiding with research (generating data, performing analysis, and interpreting results).
- Programming or scripting experience (Python, Bash/Command Line, Ruby).
Bonus points for:
– Knowledge of image processing concepts and techniques.
– Knowledge of statistics and data characterization/classification methods.
– GIS experience.
– Experience with planetary data sets.
– Experience with photogrammetry.
– Experience with SQL or database queries
Working Environment
In-person position. Computer use including inputting, reviewing and retrieving information, extended periods of viewing screen and using mouse and keyboard. Work is in an office setting with use of office equipment (e.g. printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones). Open and shared office space.
Department Statement
ShadowCam is NASA’s imaging system on board the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, while the LROC is the imaging system on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Both sets of cameras are managed and commanded from their Science Operation Center location on the ASU Tempe Campus, and are collecting data and doing ground-breaking research that is fundamentally transforming our understanding of the Moon while trailblazing a path for future lunar exploration. ShadowCam and LROC are uncovering much needed information about potential landing sites, location of important lunar resources and new scientific discoveries
