SummaryUnder close supervision, performs skilled work of routine difficulty in the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and highways; operation of light to heavy construction/maintenance type equipment; performs related work as assigned. This position is eligible to receive the snowplow stipend in accordance with Navajo County Personnel policy 2.9.Essential Job Functions(Essential function, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. - Operates a variety of construction/maintenance type equipment in the light to heavy class for road care and construction to grade, clean, move earth, and smooth such as dozers, graders, back hoes, tankers, sweepers, snow plows, etc.
- Uses tools and equipment in maintaining and construction roads and highways.
- Provides routine and manual labor work requiring heavy lifting for the construction, repair and maintenance of County roads and by-ways.
- Makes minor repairs, including welding, and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Flags traffic and helps to divert away from areas under construction with driver and worker safety in mind; places signs and barricades to protect construction sites.
- Replaces and repairs culverts, cattle guards and other roadway appurtenances; repairs and installs fences and guard rails; maintains rights of way free from brush, obstacles, and debris; falls trees with chain saws.
- Applies asphalt; patches pothole areas; seal coats/chip seals roads; applies paving fabrics and repairs crack seal.
- Assists with wild land fires as needed; creates fire barriers; removes brush; contours land topography.
- Explains project work and its impact(s) to residents and travelers on the roads when questioned.
- May lead other workers and assist others in learning operation of equipment and performance of duties.
- May perform some electrical work.
- Prepares reports and maintains records.
- Properly install drainage culverts, operate various county equipment, hand and power tools, and vehicles, county snow policy and road maintenance policy, and standard county procedures for roadside/road maintenance and construction.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of highway construction and maintenance methods and equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation and care of light to heavy highway maintenance vehicle and equipment.
- Knowledge of the care and operation of hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating highway maintenance vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in maintenance of construction equipment.
- Skill in operating various equipment safely and efficiently.
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
Desirable QualificationsHigh School Diploma or G.E.D.; AND one year experience in operating light to heavy highway construction equipment; AND one year highway construction/maintenance experience; AND required to obtain a class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 90 days of hire; AND required to obtain traffic flagger certification within first 9 months; AND maintain a good driving record; AND ability to lift 40 pounds.Employee BenefitsNavajo County offers a comprehensive employee benefits package to regular employees working 40hours per week that includes:(Regular Part Time employees working 30 – 39 hours a week receive some benefits on a pro-rated basis.Part Time employees working less than 30 hours a week and temporary employees do not receive benefits)
