Job Description:
School of Health Professions Dean’s Post-Graduate Teaching Transition Program
This program is a professional development opportunity providing a 24-month, full-time, in-person, and funded post-graduate opportunity to teach in an academic health care education setting. Participants will gain hands-on experience in teaching courses and in curricular planning, with highly structured and documented and mentorship by experienced teaching faculty.
Eligibility for Application into the Program:

Enrollment in an academic degree program related to health care at the time of application to the program.

On track to successfully complete all requirements for that academic degree prior to beginning participation in the program.

GPA ≥ 3.75

Job Duties Outlined:
Program participants will engage in teaching activities within one or more programs in the KU Medical Center’s School of Health Professions, gaining experience across a spectrum of health care education by playing roles in the education of students, patients, clients, families, clinicians, and researchers. Additionally, each participant will work closely with a mentor to identify and develop an area of educational focus, initiating a path to expertise.

Program participants will engage in teaching activities within one or more programs in the KU Medical Center’s School of Health Professions, gaining experience across a spectrum of health care education by playing roles in the education of students, patients, clients, families, clinicians, and researchers. Additionally, each participant will work closely with a mentor to identify and develop an area of educational focus, initiating a path to expertise.
Program Details
This program includes the following components:

2-year limited term appointment at the rank of faculty instructor, with benefits (health insurance, vacation leave, sick leave & retirement/403b savings).

Academic title of clinical instructor.
-
Full-time employment (1.0 FTE; 40 hours/week), with a minimum of 1 course per term (3 terms/year) of direct instruction as a co-instructor.

Close collaboration with mentor(s) and program director.

Attend KU’s Center of Teaching Excellence annual Teaching Summit (late August) as well as other educational programs identified by the program director and mentor(s).

Participate in education of School of Health Professions students using lectures, flipped classroom, facilitation, simulation, asynchronous and other emerging educational methods.

Identify and develop an area of academic focus, devoting focused time to deep exploration of the educational content and literature related to a specific area of health care education.

Participate on one local or national committee related to education in the participant’s area of professional experience or educational focus.

Develop a local educational initiative related to the participant’s area of academic interest
Teaching and Scholarship Experience
The primary teaching experiences for participants will be providing didactic coursework in one or more programs of the School of Health Professions. Participants may also be involved in the clinical education and evaluation of students, with appropriate license when required. Participants will be active in student education within the department, across curricula as an interprofessional education facilitator, and through working with student interest groups. Participants will be involved in developing and delivering synchronous and asynchronous educational programs for practicing professionals, both locally and nationally, using in-person, on-line, and at-a-distance formats.
Administration and Leadership Experience
Participants will gain experience in the administrative and leadership component of academic endeavor by working closely with the program director. Participants will assist the program’s admissions committee in screening applicants to the program and with the program’s curriculum committee to evaluate students enrolled in program coursework, both being activities intended to develop an understanding of the administrative aspects of running an accredited clinical training program. Depending upon the participant’s area of focus, there may be additional administrative and leadership opportunities.
Mentored components of the Program:
Syllabus Design & Curriculum planning
Participants will engage directly with mentors in exploring the program curriculum and accreditation requirements, identifying, and aligning core content with accreditation standards, then outlining and planning courses, all with a focus on designing academic content and activities that are student-centered, meaningful, and feasible in the context of the program and aligned with the curriculum. The faculty member serving as instructor of record for the course co-instructed by the participant will serve as a primary mentor, while other mentors may contribute according to topic and need. Participants will receive regular feedback on teaching plans from mentor(s) and the program director. A core feature of this program will be the wide range of varied learning activities embedded within the experience, designed to provide participants with exposure to different approaches to teaching as well as regular feedback on progress toward learning outcomes and career goals. Mentored support and assessment methods are designed to facilitate critical engagement with the participant’s personal professional development.
Ongoing Mentoring Sessions During the Program
Participants and mentor(s) will engage in scheduled in-person or on-line sessions weekly in the first month of the program, then at least once a month thereafter. This focused mentoring will support discussion of common issues, successful strategies, teaching challenges, and useful resources. Topics may include:

Developing expertise through a cognitive apprenticeship

Assessing student work, especially group projects and team activities

Facilitating seminar discussions

The role of prior knowledge, beliefs, and habits in the learning process; what students really understand, what they appear to know, or what they incorrectly believe

Interactive lecturing

Working with diverse student cohorts

Principles of universal design in instructional content and delivery

Distinguishing procedural from conceptual learning, and understanding why both are crucial in first mastering content and then in teaching that content to novices

Teaching sensitive topics

Accepting and responding to student feedback

Identifying and developing a plan to pursue a specific area of content expertise
Participants and mentors will consult to determine content of sessions. Additional sessions may be added to address emergent issues or topics of concern.
Reflection on the Participant’s Experience
Participants will reflect on their teaching experiences at the end of the first year of the program and in the final two months of the training program by completing the program evaluation process. Participants may choose to expand that written exercise as a publication, to apply their experience for developing a teaching portfolio, and/or to document their insights and teaching activities in preparation for job interviews leading to permanent positions as a faculty member.
