Be part of a unique initiative to provide strategic support to the Environmental Remediation Management (ERM) mission through our Waste Characterization Services Team. As a Waste Characterization Laboratory Section Leader, you will have a unique opportunity to shape and develop state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to waste characterization.
In this role, you will play a pivotal part in establishing efficient and effective laboratory operations. Your expertise will be instrumental in determining the methodologies, equipment, and personnel required to drive excellence in waste characterization. As a leader and coordinator of reporting personnel, you will provide guidance and direction, fostering a collaborative and motivated team environment.
Your responsibilities will include evaluating and updating test methodologies, ensuring ongoing training for technical personnel, and ensuring safe execution of laboratory operations. Additionally, you will administer proficiency and quality control programs, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of our waste characterization tests.

What will you be doing!
- Provides overall technical and operational direction and obtain the necessary resources for the operation of the section, ensuring that regulatory, safety, environmental, quality, operational, staffing, and future planning requirements are met.
- Remains knowledgeable of compliance programs, safety policies and procedures and ensure that the laboratory is operated safely, compliantly and in an efficient and well-maintained manner including assurance that applicable compliance programs are implemented and adhered to within the laboratory on a daily basis.
- Participates in the annual business planning and/or new initiatives within the Waste Characterization Services team which includes providing input to the budget planning and ensuring the section budget is managed and operational expenses are maintained within the approved budget;
- Contributes to maximum operating efficiency of the Section, Branch and the Division through effective financial planning and monitoring, ensuring that the necessary process improvements are identified and implemented and that future section needs are planned for;
- Ensures that laboratory services for the purpose of waste characterization are available and provided to meet client and disposition outlet requirements. This includes resolving all service problems that arise in the section, either through his/her personal knowledge and skills or by obtaining the assistance of other personnel, either internal or external to CNL.

- Maintains technical expertise in laboratory services as it relates to waste characterization – both radiological and non-radiological in nature;
- Ensure the compliant operations of the routine monitoring and maintenance of the section assets;
- May act as the section Technical Representative
- Attract, hire, train, develop, motivate and effectively utilize Waste Characterization Services staff to achieve objectives and improve performance with safety as the main focus;
- Set employee objectives and monitor performance, which includes accountability for laboratory supervisors and staff and conducting employee performance appraisals;
- Provide leadership and motivation to the section team as well as subcontractors and laboratory staff;
- Play an active role in the development of the safety culture of the section;
- Assume responsibility for activities and services of the section;
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
Education:
o Diploma in chemical technology or demonstrated experience related to the post;
Experience:
o Demonstrated leadership experience in technical planning, laboratory services and/or waste characterization;
o Strong technical background in chemistry or radiochemistry including analytical methods and instrumentation;
o Experience in nuclear waste management is desirable;
Job/Industry Specific Knowledge:
o Knowledge of industrial operations and safety codes and best practices;
o Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements and documents;
o Knowledge of international codes and practices applicable to radioactive waste management is desirable;
o Knowledge of Radiation Protection requirements and practices (CNL and/or other);
o Knowledge of Emergency Preparedness programs and Emergency response procedures (CNL and/or other);
o Knowledge of Nuclear Criticality Safety requirements and practices (CNL and/or other);
o Knowledge of nuclear materials control (CNL and/or other);
o Knowledge of Operational Quality Assurance (CNL and/or other); and
o Knowledge of Information/Inventory management.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom . CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
