Job Summary
The Senior Accountant, Corporate Accounting is responsible for the preparation of financial reports in accordance with United States (US) Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as well as the applicable regulations in Canada and the US. The incumbent works with internal stakeholders ensuring timely and accurate preparation of financial information. The role has significant interaction and exposure to senior and executive leadership team.
Main Responsibilities
External Reporting
· Prepare quarterly and annual reports as required by Canadian Securities Commissions and US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the Company’s consolidated operations
· Compile and maintain month-end checklists and electronic binders, including financial statement disclosure, on designated areas
· Assist other team members during quarterly and annual close process
· Lead the internal controls of the above noted processes in accordance with the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)
· Work closely with auditors to provide information and clarification during internal and external audits
· Prepare quarterly and annual reports as required by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) for the Company’s US consolidated railroad companies and the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) for the Company’s Canadian consolidated railroad companies
· Prepare other regulatory reports required by government agencies such as Statistics Canada and Transport Canada (TC) surveys and reports, Bureau of Economic Analysis and State regulatory filings for all US legal entities
· Update and maintain business rules to gather the differences between the US GAAP ledger and the STB and CTA ledgers
Internal Reporting
· Prepare account reconciliations by legal company entity, for all corporate general ledger accounts such as bank accounts, long-term debt, environmental liabilities, and various accrued liabilities accounts
· Comply with corporate accounting policies and procedures regarding Systems, Applications and Procedures (SAP) transaction processing
· Prepare and review internal financial reports and presentations with internal stakeholders such as Investor Relations, Taxation, Human Resources, and Financial Planning
· Follow key internal controls over financial reporting and identify potential process improvements to create efficiencies
Projects
· Implement process improvements including leveraging technology (such as TM1) to improve the financial statement close process for consolidated and regulatory books of account
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday and will currently be eligible to participate in CN’s flexible work from home policy. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
Requirements
Experience
Accounting
· Minimum 3 years of experience within an accounting firm or relevant industry experience
Education/Certification/Designation
· Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)
· Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Equivalent

Technical Skills/Knowledge
· Knowledge of US GAAP accounting policies, and securities commissions’ reporting rules and regulations in both Canada and the US
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)
· Knowledge of Visio and Business Objects
· Solid understanding of Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) Framework or internal controls over financial reporting
· Knowledge of SAP, Business Warehouse, Workiva, and TM1 applications*
