The Senior Bioinformatician will deliver RBG Kew’s mission by managing and leading the bioinformatics team allocated to a major programme to sequence 20,000 fungi and lichen specimens held by RBG Kew’s fungarium and the Natural History Museum (NHM). Over a 4-year period, the project will adopt a mixed approach of whole genome sequencing and barcoding techniques. Containing more than 1.25 million specimens including 50,000 type specimens of worldwide origin, Kew’s fungarium is home to the largest and most complete fungal collection in the world, with many specimens being only available at Kew.The Senior Bioinformatician will be responsible for managing and leading the bioinformatics team and designing the analytical strategy of the project, including computational needs. The post will successfully develop project software systems necessary to ensure the completion of data processing generated by the Fungarium Sequencing project. (PDF, 176.66kb)More detailsWe are seeking candidates with experience leading bioinformatics teams and designing genomics pipelines. Experience of assembly and analysis of high-throughput sequence data, and of compiling, handling and analysing a variety of large datasets is essential. Knowledge in phylogenomics and/or comparative genomics is expected. Experience in fungal genomics and/or processing of genomes generated from old collections will be a plus. You will have a PhD degree, or a relevant equivalent qualification, in a science discipline.This is a 4-year, fixed-term position within the Science Directorate.This role is based at Kew and the NHM, with some other UK travel required.Please upload a copy of your research CV to support your application.
