Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our civil engineering clients plan, build and own an extraordinarily diverse portfolio from site developments to water systems, and from energy facilities to transport networks. Their needs vary from select civil engineering skills, such as grading and drainage, to full management and execution of civil engineering design.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to join a team of approximately 25 Engineers and Technicians who work with others throughout the Midlands of England. The role will be based in our Birmingham office but you will work across multidisciplinary teams in a diverse and busy environment. You will have the opportunity to take on responsibility and leadership of the projects on which you work, or to increase your technical specialist skills. This role will see you leading projects or technical components of projects. Our current projects are varied, exciting and often high profile within the fields of Energy, Water and Flood Alleviation, External works and Site development. We work across all phases of projects from advisory, concept, through to detailed design and construction supervision. We deliver projects for a variety of clients and organisations including government agencies (both national and local), local authorities, private developers and contractors. We work on projects across the Midlands, the UK and overseas as part of a wide and diverse global organisation and are therefore able to bring in broad expertise as well as providing support to others around the world.

Projects the team is currently working on includes a portfolio of major energy related schemes such as the NeuConnector interconnector, infrastructure provision with Sellafield, flood alleviation schemes with the Environment Agency, infrastructure upgrade works for Severn Trent, developing new visitor centres for the National Trust as well as site development projects for developers such as Berkeley Homes.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are seeking a technically competent professional who has proven ability to deliver technical elements such as drainage including SUDs, pavement or alignment design, utility design including supply and alignments, 3D surface modelling, flood alleviation, public realm design, or masterplanning. Ideally you will have an interest in conducting design in a 3D environment, BIM, or Digital automation and be passionate about mentoring more junior engineers in the team.

We are seeking the following qualifications and skills;

  • A recognised professional qualification, such as Incorporated or Chartered status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or have experience which is equivalent to gaining a professional qualification
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with small teams, and coordinate complex design challenges with other disciplines
  • Responsible for day to day management of defined parts of design projects and/or individual projects
  • Experience in undertaking design, supervising the work of others, checking of calculations, drawings and other documentation to ensure high quality deliverables.
