ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITYWe are seeking an exceptional individual to support ONE’s policy and data work through data analysis, research (quantitative, qualitative and policy focused), and data visualisation. This role will work across the issue areas which ONE advocates for, including development finance, global health, climate finance, and gender. Knowledge or experience of these policy areas would be advantageous.This position will support the data team’s work on and with data, helping develop new and impactful advocacy and policy tools, creating efficiencies in the management of data, and supporting other team members in their use of data tools such as Python, Flourish, Observable, Data Commons, and other relevant tools.With data.one.org, ONE is working to become the key open repository of international development, global health, and development finance data and analysis. This role will contribute to building the best platform to explore, analyse and understand data from developing countries, with a particular focus on Africa.To succeed, the ideal candidate must be truly passionate about this cause, with a head for numbers and details, and an ability to translate complex issues into something that’s both accessible and accurate.You are self-starter, solution focused, a joy to work with, and most of all, you must realise that you are joining something that is a mission larger than your job, your career and even this organisation.This is a full-time opportunity based in London or Berlin, reporting to the Data Director. Ideally candidates would be available to start from Q4 2024.IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

  • Conduct quantitative analysis of data related to Global and African development issues, across ONE’s policy priorities.
  • Develop products, tools and infrastructure that leverage Data Commons and AI to use data in new and better ways in support of our mission.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the Global Policy & Strategy Team’s data infrastructure and databases, including the ETL process and associated python tools.
  • Support the development and maintenance of data.one.org, our platform on data and analysis on the economic, political, and social changes impacting Africa.
  • Succinctly summarize key trends and results from analysis for broad consumption.
  • Develop new products for the analysis presentation of data – including python packages and scripts, Observable notebooks and projects, and Flourish/Plot data visualisations.
  • Provide training to ONE staff on quantitative analysis, data analysis principles, data visualisation guidelines, and our data tools.
  • Prepare written documents on policy issues including briefings, report chapters, policy analyses, blog posts, op eds, talking points, and other products.
  • Provide general fact-checking and data analysis as needed by the policy team and others within the organization.
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities to expand ONE’s data brand and influence among the NGO/non-profit/think-tank and data science communities.

WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, or equivalent experience, in economics, political science, international affairs, data science or other relevant field.
  • At least 4 years of applicable experience (post-graduate)
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills required, with demonstrated skills in data extraction and transformation. Experience using Python professionally is required. Experience using JavaScript is strongly desired. An understanding of knowledge graphs is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills required – especially in translating complex data and analysis, and presenting it in clear and compelling ways.
  • Strong skills or experience with data visualization and information design. Experience creating visualisations using Flourish or Observable is strongly desired.
  • Quick turnaround research skills-must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics to explain complicated policy topics to a broad audience.
  • Ability to synthesize policy documents with an eye to key points and relevance to ONE.
  • Ability to manage multiple, shifting priorities under tight deadlines while performing in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Related work history in development economics, development finance, poverty and infectious disease alleviation, advocacy, policy, legislation and/or demonstrable interest in the causes ONE supports
