We do this through providing technical leadership and specialist expertise, managing the National Control and Competence Frameworks, facilitating technical growth and lateral learning, and assuring regional delivery.Our role is to find creative technical solutions to problems, to set effective strategy and policy, to cut red tape, to find better ways of doing things and to provide strong competence and assurance regimes that make sure we do things effectively.Who are we looking for?We are looking for a highly capable, experienced and motivated civil/geotechnical engineer or engineering geologist to bolster our Network Technical Head (Geotechnics) team in the role of Senior Engineer, based in Milton Keynes, which sits at the intersection of railway civil and systems engineering, infrastructure asset management, and research, development and technology.What does the average day look like?Reporting to the Principal Engineer, you will be part of a small team with a big mandate. This is to set and continuously improve Network Rail’s framework for managing its vast, heterogenous, ageing and weather-vulnerable earthwork portfolio, to ensure adequate slope safety and railway performance whilst achieving value-for-money for the farepayer and taxpayer. You will be familiar with slope stability and risk assessments, and comfortable with uncertainty.What makes this role unique is that you will need to apply these concepts on a macro scale across the key accountabilities, working in an environment where dynamic re-prioritisation is often necessary. You will collaborate with our engineers in regions and routes, and keenly feel a duty to provide the best possible service to them.You will have the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of technology by steering and supporting our Intelligent Infrastructure and Research and Development programmes. No two days will be alike.The role of Senior Engineer [Buildings & Civils] is a multifaceted role in that you will undertake various duties including (but not limited to):· Provide expert advice, input and support associated with the provision of services for our customers and suppliers.· Support professional leadership for the geotechnical engineering discipline.· Support the setting of policy and standards, operational processes and systems. Manage the design and delivery of programmes for the development of technical capability required within Network Rail, including the competence framework and effective training materials.· Provide technical input to the development of standards, specifications, means of compliance and KPIs for Asset Management, including system risks. Support engineering analysis and risk assessment, including assessment of applications for derogations and non-compliance.· Support the development of strategy, technology and assets across functions and with industry partners. Liaise with product manufacturers, including external stakeholder e.g. TOC and provide input into the acceptance processes.· Proactively research and respond to changes in the internal and external requirements and practice which impact upon policy and standards.· Identify opportunities for technical and business process improvement and innovation, developing business cases and Investment Papers where required.Essential CriteriaThe successful candidate for this role will be required to be/have: –1. Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6)2. Membership of a relevant technical body3. Broad technical engineering experience4.
