Job SummaryThe Hypersonic Test Engineer will be responsible for maintaining day-to-day operation of the HYPULSE hypersonic wind tunnel. This individual must work closely with internal/external technical teams, Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) programmatic staff, and students while supporting research personnel during wind tunnel test campaigns. This role will include operating the HYPULSE wind tunnel and ancillary equipment, training and overseeing students to do the same, and overseeing the maintenance schedule necessary to maintain the tunnel and equipment. This individual is responsible for upholding a culture of safety and collaboration, developing technical training plans for new students, and executing scheduled tasks and test campaigns to accomplish deliverables for both internal research projects and external customers under the direction of the HYPULSE Director. Additionally, as part of this position, this Hypersonic Test Engineer will lead the engineering design and implementation of periodic upgrades and improvements to the tunnels’ fluid systems, vacuum systems, heaters, pressure vessels, cryogenic equipment, hydraulic equipment, and data acquisition and control systems.This position may be filled at a Test Engineer or Senior Test Engineer based on experience.Who We AreThe Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) is a nonprofit entity that extends the reach and impact of Purdue University’s deep research strengths and top-ranked academic programs in engineering, agriculture, science and technology.   • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Two (2) years of experience in design, installation, and operation of high-pressure systems
  • Experience with CAD and 3-D solid modeling software
  • In lieu of up to 2 years of industry experience, an advanced degree will be considered.
  • Hands on experience in an industrial scale propulsion or aerodynamic test facility executing regular ground testing for customers at a rapid cadence.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance to be considered for this position. Maintaining this clearance is a continuous condition of employment. Failure to obtain or retain the required clearance may result in termination.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience operating high speed wind tunnels.
  • Deep knowledge of high-pressure fluid systems with an academic/professional background in fluid dynamics.
  • Knowledge of relevant electronic systems including pressure transducers, thermocouples, and high-speed data acquisition systems.
  • Experience performing material and stress calculations.

Education and Experience for Senior Test Engineer:Required:

  • All of the requirements for the Test Engineer PLUS;
  • Four (4) years (Senior Test Engineer) of experience in design, installation, and operation of high-pressure systems
