This new part time (0.2 FTE) post is available immediately on a permanent basis.This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.The pattern of the working week can be negotiated.The roleWe are seeking to appoint a new Senior Lecturer with a particular interest in aerosol climate interactions.The climate crisis means that the targets set by COP21 will soon be exceeded leading to increasingly damaging climate impacts. While stringent mitigation methods are obviously essential, greenhouse gas concentrations are projected to continue to increase under all future scenarios increasingly exposing the Earth to tipping points. It is therefore important that humanity examines additional tools such as Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) that might be needed in the future fight against climate change. In 2023 the United Nations Environment Panel called for establishing “a robust, equitable and rigorous trans-disciplinary scientific review process to reduce uncertainties associated with SRM and better inform decision-making”. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will actively research the rapidly developing SRM arena.The University of Exeter performs cutting-edge world-leading research into solar radiation modification (SRM) via work performed by Prof Jim Haywood’s and Dr Dan Partridge’s groups: ( ). The candidate will work alongside Prof Jim Haywood and Dr Dan Partridge and will develop research ideas in SRM leading to successful grant applications. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise/co- supervise PhD students, Masters student projects, and will support effective two-way collaboration between the Met office and the University of Exeter.About youFor a Senior Lecturer post you will:

  • Possess a depth or breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated by a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in mathematics, physics, atmospheric sciences or a related numerate discipline, of the core knowledge relating to atmospheric aerosols to teach and support learning and research into atmospheric aerosols and their climatic impacts.
  • Lead research into atmospheric aerosols and their climatic impacts and lead and support successful grant applications to appropriate research councils and philanthropic organisations.
  • Contribute to the design, development and delivery a range of modules or programmes at various levels; applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques; identifying sources of funding and securing funds for own scholarly activities and providing academic leadership to those working within programme areas.
