What is the opportunity?
This is a critical role within the Corporate Support Technology and Operations Finance Control team. As the world of banking evolves the importance of technology has never been so important. And as technology spend increases, the accounting over that spend becomes of significant importance. As a subject matter expert, you will lead the organization in the accounting for technology expenditures, especially in the area of application development.
What you will do?
As a key member of the T&O Financial Control Team, reporting to the Director, T&O Financial Control, your responsibilities will include:
- For proposed application development projects:
- Review expected deliverables and spend to provide preliminary guidance whether expenditures are to be capitalized as internally generated intangible assets or expensed
- Assist business partners with documenting support for useful life assessments
- Raise accounting issues that may be present in project proposals
- Work with project managers to review actual application development expenditures for Large Programs in order to determine the percentage of spend that should be capitalized and the expected useful life of the software assets
- Lead a study to sample project spend in order to determine and support a capitalization rate that is generically applied to all application development projects that are not considered a Large Program
- Lead controls around capitalized development projects including:
- Conducting annual impairment assessments on Large Programs
- Quarterly impairment review of projects that were cancelled or put on hold, projects related to retired applications, and potentially stale projects
- Propose and implement process improvements, streamlining, standardization, data analytics and controls for all of the above
- Interpret IFRS accounting standards to determine the accounting and financial reporting treatment for new, material, and/or complex, unusual transactions within T&O and lead discussions with the Accounting Policy Group
- Prepare memos and presentations, as needed, such as the quarterly finance slides to the T&O Operating Committee
- Provide training, coaching, and development to colleagues (managers) that may assist in the above
- Lead special projects as assigned by Director, Finance Control
- Manage assigned financial control responsibilities of the team
What you need to succeed?
Must-have
- An accounting designation (CPA or equivalent from other countries)
- 5+ years of financial accounting experience, including at least 1 year of senior manager experience
- Accounting memo writing skills
- Hands-on experience interpreting and implementing IFRS accounting standards
- A self-starter who can work independently and multi-task
- Team player with strong communication skills that is able to bring together large groups of stakeholders to achieve a common goal
- Ability to work through complex and ambiguous situations
