Purpose

The Senior Manager, Treasury is responsible for assisting in the leadership and support of all facets of the Treasury department’s Financing Planning, Liquidity Management, Hedging Framework and execution, Rating Agency engagement, Covenant compliance, and Benchmarking and key Guardrails that Treasury operates within. This position will also support the organization’s Capital Market activities, as required, including support on finance initiatives relating to capital structure and debt administration for the Regulated Services Group. This position will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to meet our strategic objectives.

Accountabilities

Planning and Budgeting:

  • Lead the preparation of the overall financing plan, as well as the updated in year forecasts for financing and liquidity management, working closely with FP&A, and maintaining and enhancing the Treasury models that are used to complete this exercise
  • Lead Treasury efforts and engagement with support from FP&A for modelling of capital raises and Rating Agency exit metrics
  • Support the preparation of the overall financing plan and strategy for the organization as part of the five-year plan
  • Provide strategy and implement interest rate hedging for the organization. This will include keeping up to date on market rates and trends along with investigating appropriate hedging strategies for the organization

Rating Agency Engagement:

  • Lead and support efforts in meeting the 4 Credit Rating Agencies that Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. and its various subsidiaries use, including S&P, Moody’s, Fitch and DBRS
  • Subject matter expert on all Rating Agency methodologies and adjustments
  • Research, understand and lead efforts on educating key internal stakeholders on key metrics to maintain existing ratings
  • Lead and support the annual reviews by providing forecasts, presentations, and supporting documentation to the Rating Agencies
  • Lead and support efforts to stay apprised and up to date on Industry trends and changes to the rating agencies methodologies that may impact our organization, including key ESG metrics and criteria

Benchmarking and Key Guardrails:

  • Lead and support Treasury Benchmarking activities and maintenance of key Guardrails to ensure adherence to thresholds such as Fixed to Floating Ratio, average liquidity, % Maturing Debt, etc.…
  • Continuous benchmarking to Peers on key Guardrails to ensure organization and its subsidiaries are in line with Peers and industry standards
  • Lead and support the upkeep of an IRR model and slip sheet to ensure clear understanding of all financing instruments

Hedging Framework, Policy and Plan:

  • Lead and support the completion of the Hedging Framework, as well as Hedging Policy and Plan for Interest Rates and Foreign Exchange
  • Leadership in terms of Treasury expertise and knowledge on all forms of hedging instruments with respect to Interest Rates and Foreign Exchange

Capital Markets, Project Finance and Bank Facilities:

  • Responsible for supporting all aspects of capital market transactions for Debt or Equity securities.
  • This will include reviewing structures, agreements, accounting and rating agency treatment, and compiling management responses for the Due Diligence process, amongst other items
  • Communicate regularly with bank contacts on different types of financing products and the state of debt/capital markets
  • Provide support in negotiating or renegotiating Bank Credit facilities

Other:

  • Supporting various activities in the Treasury Operations area such as Cash Management, Systems, and Compliance
  • Supporting Rate Case filings for the Regulated Services Group regarding financing assumptions
  • Lead and support Treasury due diligence process for potential acquisitions

Team Dynamics and Operational Excellence culture:

  • Foster an environment of excellence and teamwork where employees are disciplined in processes and work together to resolve issues
  • Ensure appropriate cross training of roles for seamless coverage
  • Coach and develop direct or indirect reports highlighting any training and/or development needs as required
  • Work cooperatively with internal stakeholders such as Regulatory, Accounting, FP&A, Tax, Business Development & Legal to achieve Financing objectives

Education and Experience

  • 7+ years of relevant experience of relevant Treasury experience for the listed Key Accountabilities
  • CPA designation, CFA an asset
  • Excellent excel and modelling skills
  • Rating Agency methodology knowledge
  • Hedging products knowledge for Interest Rates and Foreign Exchange
  • Proven track record of project initiation/execution in a fast-paced professional setting
  • Demonstrated experience or ability in training and developing junior staff members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to execute complex deliverables on a timely basis while managing competing priorities
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills and an ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Collaborative team player that can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Highly motivated, committed, self-starter and can adapt with changing priorities
