Through the collection of blood samples from Patients, to assist the workforce of Pathology in providing a specialised, diagnostic service contributing to the clinical care of the patient, to enable diagnosis and subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment given.Using skills gained through the Phlebotomy training scheme, the individual will be expected to develop judgement and utilise learnt specialist skills and scientific knowledge to assist in the provision of a high quality and timely Phlebotomy service.The Phlebotomy service covers all areas of the Trust including satellite units such asDonald Wilson House and Children’s Assessment unit / Paediatrics Outpatients DepartmentMain duties of the jobTo perform Phlebotomy ensuring minimal distress and discomfort to patients always.To take blood samples from patients, which will assist in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Phlebotomy training manual.The post holder will not be expected to possess any formal qualifications thoughsome academic interest in biological sciences would be advantageous.The post holder will be expected to have received training in phlebotomy techniques and be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence such that there is minimal distress and discomfort to patients throughout the venesecting experience.Full training appropriate for the use of the laboratory computer system will be given and the Trust PAS computer system where appropriate.
