We are looking for a Senior Portfolio Management Advisor to coordinate the planning and management of Kennecott’s Development and Sustaining Capex portfolios. This role is key to ensuring that the right projects are completed at the right time to enable the best business outcome for the Capex available to Kennecott for the given year. It also ensures that the multi-year portfolio is developed and matured in advance to allow successful delivery in the budgeted year.
The role promotes discipline and stability in the capital planning process, and is the key link between site gatekeepers, Asset Management, Operations, Risk, Finance, Projects & Engineering (P&E) delivery team, and cost control for the capital portfolios. The position is suited to an energetic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individual who is seeking a challenging role within a leading organization. Reporting to the Portfolio Manager within the P&E Governance team, you will:
- Assist in developing and maintaining a portfolio of capital projects, aligned with the company’s strategic objectives and financial goals.
- Evaluate and manage new project approvals to the plan. Assist in balancing and prioritizing the plan to achieve company targets and business outcomes.
- Ensure that projects that enter the plan have a suitable business case and justification prior to being admitted into the system.
- Maintain project data in the portfolio management system.
- Coordinate portfolio compilation, reconciliation, and preparation activities to support periodic portfolio management working group workshops.
- Monitor and analyze portfolio performance data and KPIs; assist with portfolio dashboards and status reports, providing regular updates to senior management on portfolio performance, issues, and risks.
- Participate in the development of the company’s capital planning process, including the identification and prioritization of potential capital projects.
- Develop and maintain relationships with a large range of stakeholders to ensure that the portfolio is effective and accurately managed.
- Assist and manage risk in the capital plan throughout the year to ensure that Capital targets are achieved and that the spend occurs on projects that best benefit the business.
- Ensure alignment with Capital portfolio and zero based opex budgets through close relationships with Asset Management.
- Assist the independent project review team with plan inputs and impacts.
- Support asset owners with the project initiation process, including guidance on project charters.
- Ensure that timely project capitalizations occur across the portfolio.
What you’ll bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, related field or equivalent industry experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in project and/or portfolio management with a focus on capital projects
- Experience in the mining, oil & gas, construction, manufacturing, or energy industries.
- Strong financial acumen, with experience in developing and managing project budgets, financial forecasts, and business cases.
- Knowledge of risk management, project scheduling, capital accounting and stage-gate processes.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with project teams, senior management, and influence.
- Experience with SharePoint, Excel and Power BI analysis and reporting tools
- Understanding of relevant legislation, Rio Tinto systems, governance frameworks, and assurance requirements.
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Certifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or other relevant certifications are desirable, but not required.
- Knowledge of ERP software (SAP).

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
