The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The Division promotes socially inclusive development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities and Indigenous Peoples. DISD activities include: i) research, analysis and policy guidance on social development issues; ii) support to intergovernmental processes and mechanisms relating to social development; and iii) provision of technical cooperation and capacity development.

This internship is located in the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch-Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenious Issues (IPDB-SPFII), Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The intern reports to the Senior Social Affairs Officer of IPDB-SPFII.

The intern will assist with the preparation, planning and servicing for the Twenty-third Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In addition to the aforementioned task, the intern will provide crucial support in other logistical aspects and substantive work as required by the Secretariat.

The intern’s tasks will include:

  • Assist with registration, including preparation of materials pertaining to the 23rd Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues;
  • Assist with the organization of side events and other logistical matters;
  • Assist with the list of speakers for specific item agendas during the 23rd Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues;
  • Informal translation (English <> Spanish) of documents and media content, as required;

This internship is designed to be full-time. It is expected that the intern will work fully in-person until 12 May, after which, work may be carried out in a hybrid manner.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work.
