POSITION DETAILS
The challenges software engineers solve for at Major Tom are big, complex, and are unlike anywhere else in world or another! Gone are the days of clunky, purpose-built, single use mission control software that even most satellite operators aren’t a fan of. Are you ready to blur the boundaries between earth and space with cutting-edge, enterprise-grade mission control/ground station software? The role will report to the Product Manager of Major Tom and will work out of Xplore office in Redmond Space District, Washington.
You will be empowered to think big, invent on behalf of our customers, work with autonomy, and find elegant solutions to hard problems in an intentionally small team. Major Tom is changing fast, and you will never have a dull day in this dynamic role where you will both learn and grow while you build the go-to software that delivers Satellite-Operations-as-a-Service.
Requirements
- Must be a current U.S. citizen or current lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
- B.S. in Computer Science from an accredited academic institution recognized or based in the U.S.
- 1.5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with a strong understanding of modern software development principles and practices.
- Proven expertise in multiple cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and Kubernetes.
- Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and container orchestration.
- Proficiency in at least two programming languages (Golang, Python, Ruby Java, etc.) and scripting languages (Bash, Terraform). Desire to work on new programming languages required to grow in this role.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible) is a strong plus.
- Solid experience with cloud monitoring tools such as Datadog, Sentry, and Pagerduty. Must be able to go beyond using these tool – independently pinpoint root cause(s) and resolve underlying issues and test solutions.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
- Passion for learning and staying ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
- Solid experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Security-first mindset and understanding of application security best practices.
- Familiarity with GitOps workflow and Kubernetes operators.
Responsibilities for this role include:
- Design, implement, and maintain robust features for Major Tom application, focusing on user growth, performance and scalability.
- Write high level and low-level design documents for products and features based on requirement discussions with Product.
- Own the cloud infrastructure, deploying and managing applications and services on Kubernetes.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, etc.).
- Troubleshoot and resolve application and infrastructure issues, ensuring high availability and reliability.
- Collaborate with product and design teams to translate user needs into technical solutions – specifically conduct thorough technical feasibility and dive deep into building new-to-world features.
- Continuously learn and stay up to date with the latest cloud technologies and best practices.
- Modernize Major Tom codebase and supporting infrastructure with scale, performance, and security in mind.
- Build robust and scalable APIs that serve as gateways for seamless integration and data exchange, ensuring a smooth user experience.
Top Priorities to be Accomplished During the First Six Months:
Modernize Major Tom Codebase – Take ownership of assigned modules/tasks and work with Major Tom Software Team and make bi-weekly code commits.
Modernize Major Tom cloud infrastructure – updated Kubernetes version on EKS/AKS
Identify root causes of assigned customer outages/customer reported bugs, deliver technical approach document, receive buy-in and develop/deploy fixes.
Streamline end-to-end build-commit and cloud monitoring systems from ‘startup’ to ‘enterprise grade.’
Own at least one new Major Tom feature end-to-end and deliver the feature on-time.
COMPENSATION
The base salary range for this role is $90K-$120K

Employees (and their families) can be covered by medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. The HSA qualified plan is for full-time employees working 30 hours or more per week.
Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
Full time employees earn PTO at a rate of 1.33 days per month. There are a minimum of 13 paid holidays each year for full-time employees.
