We are seeking to recruit a part time Specialty Doctor for the Bedford Liaison Psychiatry Service. The post holder will join the existing multidisciplinary Liaison Psychiatry service at East London Foundation Trust and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is permanent, however, applications from doctors who plan to subsequently apply for higher training may also be considered.This new specialty doctor post has been developed to support the work of the department covering a working age and older adult population. The post is well supervised and is suitable for doctors with three or more years of psychiatric experience. There are opportunities for special interest sessions in more specialist areas of liaison psychiatry. Supervision of junior doctors is an important part of the role along with involvement in departmental teaching, including of undergraduates, and involvement in audit and quality improvement.Our Trust has an excellent record in training and development for SAS doctors. There are SAS specific training days and various development opportunities.Main duties of the jobUp to 8 PAsThe Specialty Doctor will work closely with the consultant psychiatrists of the team and will be responsible for the assessment and management of mental health problems on a routine and emergency basis. On average 6.5 Programmed Activities per week will be devoted to Direct Clinical Care. Special interest sessions or dedicated time and support to work towards CESR can be negotiated with the Clinical Director.The post holder will support both the liaison service in multidisciplinary assessment, treatment and management of patients with mental disorders as envisaged in NICE Guidelines. The post holder will liaise with the other relevant organisations e.g. the Acute Hospital ensuring a seamless service.The workload in PLS is variable and is dependent on number of referrals. The specialty doctor would be expected to attend handovers at 0900 each day. These handovers usually last no more than 30 minutes. Qualifications
Essential
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
Desirable
- A higher degree such as MD or PhD
- Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
- Approval under Section 12(2) of Mental Health Act 1983, or plan to gain approval within 6 months of appointment.

- Consultation skills to services, teams and individuals
Knowledge
Essential
- Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult or Old Age Psychiatry within the last 3 years
- Good working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
- Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
- Robust experience of working with severe and enduring mental illness and risk assessment, management
