Hybrid (a few days per week in-person in New York, USA, and a few days per week remote)Expected duration6 months – Desired start date is 1 August 2024, or sooner.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duration of the internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States. Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Office of Military Affairs (OMA), Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The incumbent report to the Peacekeeping Affairs Officer (Military Strategic Communications) and other Desk Officers as required. The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) serves as a center of excellence for peace operations, responsible for preventing, responding to and managing conflict and sustaining peace in countries where peace operations under its purview are deployed, and provides support to other entities on peace and security issues. The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department’s mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions. Responsibilities Responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Support social media campaigns; preparation of presentations; support organization of events; web page updates; preparation of audiovisual content. • Support to develop communication materials based on good practices, impact example and achievements. • Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of social media content, often under tight deadlines. • Format content, draft abstracts and summaries. • Research and create resources guide on specific topics. • Support proofreading of documents by partner organizations. • Support web-search, collecting and organizing information on the Military Component in the Field and related subjects and activities by partners. • Assist in editing and drafting messages, biographies, reports and articles. Monitor and analyze statistics related to social media content. • Gather social media content at special events (conferences, training, exhibits, etc.). • Assist in the creation of original content for social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Linkedin. • Attend meetings as an observer. • Manage meeting agendas and draft meeting notes. • Assists with special projects as assigned.Qualifications/special skillsEducation To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening. In addition, interested candidates must: – Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point); – Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and, – Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
