Comprising over 130 000 artifacts, a numismatic library and archives, the National Currency Collection (NCC) is Canada’s most extensive collection of money and related media. The collection, managed by the Bank of Canada Museum, is made up of Canadian and international coins and notes, production material, banking and government ephemera as well as objects relating to the measurement and containment of money. It also serves as a source for public reference, a resource for the development of historically significant exhibitions and a means of preserving artifacts connected to Canada’s and the world’s economic history.What you will do
The role of the Summer Student will be to assist with the day-to-day tasks associated with the care and use of the collections. The successful candidate will take on projects in line with the rehousing, documentation and digitization of specific collections. Undertaken under the general direction of a manager or a more senior colleague, the work includes:
- The rehousing and storage of collections including the creation of storage mounts.
- Assist with data entry and updating of catalogue records in the Museum’s collection management system – Minisis M3.
- Assists with preventive conservation, environmental monitoring, and location inventories for collections.
- Assist with the digitization of two-dimensional objects.
- Assist with the production and support of special events, especially where the Museum’s collections are featured.
What you need to succeed
The ideal candidate is a post-secondary student interested in pursuing a career in the museum field who has completed courses that pertain to collection management.The candidate should have the following skills:
- Knowledge of artifact handling techniques
- Knowledge of collection management principles
- Knowledge of collection management systems and thesaurus-based cataloguing (Chenhall, RAD)
- Knowledge of preventative conservation
Nice-to-have
- Ability to work in English and in French
- Knowledge of numismatic collections
- Experience with Minisis M3
Your education and experience
This position requires the student to be enrolled in a post-secondary education program such as Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, Archives and Records Management or a related field. Previous experience with material culture collections would be considered an asset.What you need to know
- Language requirement: English or French essential
- Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
- Security level required: Be eligible to obtain Reliability
- There will be no relocation assistance provided
