Role Responsibilities

The Alberta Public Service (APS) is looking for motivated and enthusiastic students interested in developing valuable workplace skills and acquiring insight into public service employment specifically for the Ministry of Children and Family Services.

The Summer Student Wage Opportunities – Children and Family Services intake provides a centralized approach where students, like you, can apply to be considered for various opportunities across the Ministry of Children and Family Services, specifically in our Child Intervention Division. Leaders from across the Division can easily access and review this pool of potential students to find the best candidate for their short-term wage opportunity.

The Summer Student role encompasses a broad range of jobs involved in providing entry-level administrative, program and office support functions associated with the delivery of Child Intervention services and programs. The work assigned can be fulfilled by individuals with limited to no experience or program knowledge. The emphasis is on learning about the program areas, policies and regulations. Whether you are completing a certificate program or a doctorate program, we have a variety of opportunities that could be the perfect match for your career development and personal growth!

Locations

We have opportunities available across the province in each of our different regions within Child Intervention. We may not have an opportunity available in every city listed but we encourage students to indicate their preferred locations in their application and we will do our best to match you to an opportunity closest to you. Children and Family Services serves communities in 5 regions across the province:

• North Region – Includes Edson, Hinton, Whitecourt, Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, Lac La Biche, St. Paul, Vegreville, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Slave Lake, Grande Prairie, Peace River, High Prairie, High Level, Valleyview, Fort McMurray and the Metis Settlements.
• Edmonton Region – Includes Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Stony Plain, Leduc, Alexander First Nation and Enoch Cree Nation.
• Central Region – Includes Lloydminster, Wainwright, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Drayton Valley, Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, Stettler, Drumheller, and Olds.
• Calgary Region – Includes Calgary, High River and Airdrie.
• South Region – Includes Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Blairmore/Crowsnest Pass, Taber, and Brooks.

Please note, you must be located within Alberta during your term to work as a summer student.

Summer employment opportunities typically begin in May and conclude at the end of August. Students are hired for a two to four months period. Students are offered temporary wage employment by a ministry or department.

Qualifications

To be eligible for summer student employment, individuals must:

• At minimum have a high school diploma and no experience, or
• Be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution, have completed the full requirements of the degree/diploma or recently graduated within the last 6 months.
• Students may be enrolled in part-time or full-time studies.

Preference will be given to students with an Academic focus in Social Work. This can include enrollment in a Social Work Degree or Diploma program or a related program such as:

• A related degree in BA Child Studies/Child & Youth Care, BA Education, Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Human Services, BA/BSc Psychology, BA Sociology, Bachelor of Community Rehab, BSc. Family Studies/Human Ecology, BA Early Child Development, Law Degree.
• A related diploma in Addictions/Counseling, Child and Youth Care, Human Services, or Criminal Justice.
• Or a related certificate.

Notes

Salary varies based on the classification of the summer student opportunity. The hourly wage is paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Wage (casual) employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings, in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.

Summer students are offered wage positions for a period of two to four months in duration. The number of hours of work per week is 36.25 hours.

Final candidates will be required to undergo security screening to be hired for a summer student opportunity.
