Salary: $149,852 (Step 01) to $191,900 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
The selectee will be entitled to a cost of living allowance of 3.15% in addition to the basic salary.

Duties
As a Center Director (Supervisory Biologist), within the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (PIERC), some of your specific duties will include:
- Maintains responsibility for all aspects of the leadership, administration, operation, and management of PIERC.
- Works closely with the Regional Director of the Northwest-Pacific Islands Region in managing all operational and research functions of the Center.
- Functions as a line supervisor for a large, complex, multi-layered workforce of widely varying occupations and knowledge levels. Line supervision responsibilities must include workforce planning, analysis of staff capabilities and expertise in relation to future growth areas, and all aspects of personnel management.
- Partners with indigenous cultures from the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, and other Pacific nations to preserve cultural practices dependent on ecosystems and species.
- Operates high-visibility programs, such as the brown tree snake program on Guam; the Keystone Initiative on Hawaiian Forest Birds; and avian malaria programs that are of interest to the Hawaiian Congressional delegation and senior Interior officials.
- Serves as the regional primary responder during natural disasters, such as typhoons, tsunamis, and earthquakes as they relate to USGS personnel, facilities, ecological resources, and, most importantly, the required function of preventing movement of invasive species between Pacific Islands.
- Helps serve the needs of decision makers in in Hawaii, Guam, the Freely Associated States of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau, and other Pacific Islands in managing the largest collection of threatened and endangered species, habitats, and ecosystems in the United States.
- Works with various Federal agencies, internal program coordinators, team managers, and external entities to define scientific goals, develop collaborative partnerships, and to obtain funding to conduct scientific studies.
- Communicates with high-level administrators within and outside USGS; local and national-level legislators and their staffs; local, regional, and national media staff; and senior-level representatives of client agencies and non-government organizations in Hawaii, Guam, and across the Pacific basin to advocate Agency and Center mission and programs.
- Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience–courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in “A” above. For GS-15: In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.
Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and coordinating major interdisciplinary projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a multi-discipline scientific program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a multi-discipline scientific study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major interdisciplinary scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
