As a hub for campus engagement and information, the sustainability team fosters a culture of sustainability through building operations and development, relating to the community and environment around us, and in embedding a sustainability mindset into teaching and learning.Equity is an essential component of sustainability, and the Office of Sustainability together with Humber Polytechnic works to achieving balance between the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of campus teaching, culture, and operations.Visit the Office of Sustainability website for more information: .About the Sustainability Communications & Events Assistant Role:Under the direction of the Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability Communication and Events Assistant will assist with communication and events initiatives for the Office of Sustainability. They are responsible for supporting the delivery of sustainable events, to promote sustainability across the institution and support the current Sustainability Strategic Sustainability Plan.The incumbent will also: work with communications tools (website, social media, Canva, InDesign etc.), including direct design and content of marketing materials (Humber TV, posters, signage, etc.); script, film and edit videos, support tracking metrics related to communications and events, and provide office administrative support as required.Specifically:

  • Provide support with event planning and coordination including Orientation Week, Earth Week, Fair Trade Campus Week, and other events Humber’s Office of Sustainability is involved with (occasionally includes weekend hours).
  • Promote Humber Sustainability at North and Lakeshore campuses: Design and mount posters, help manage volunteers, run engaging sustainability events for students and staff, and create new and engaging activities to educate the community on sustainability.
  • Brainstorm and implement new and creative ideas to increase awareness about sustainability initiatives at Humber Polytechnic, including designing print and online campaigns (Canva).
  • Assist with communications initiatives including social media posts, website maintenance, videos, internal and external newsletters, reviewing general sustainability email requests and other tasks as assigned. Manage and update a social media calendar and schedule posts.

  • Soon to be completed degree or recent graduate in Journalism, Digital Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Event Management, Media Studies, or sustainability-related programs.

Experience/Skills:

  • Demonstrate advanced writing and editing skills (repots, presentations, blogs, feature articles, social media posts, video scripts etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability for creative thinking, with an understanding and interest in sustainability, especially in the higher education sector
  • Team player who is energetic, enthusiastic and self-directed
  • Ability to create and express new ideas related to communications, and show initiative, curiosity and appetite for learning
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment; able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Comfortable working with new technology systems (e.g., Canva, Hootsuite, Microsoft Office Suite, InDesign), and the ability to self-teach on various applications
  • Volunteer experience with any of the above is valid.
