Work LocationNew YorkExpected duration3 monthsDuties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UN Environment New York Office is a bridge builder, specialized in establishing and maintaining critical links with the UN Secretariat, UN organizations and entities headquartered in New York, Permanent Missions to the UN, civil society organizations, academic institutions and others. It ensures that UNEP’s voice and guidance on environmental policy issues are considered in the deliberations which take place at UNHQ, both in intergovernmental and interagency processes. In the area of interagency affairs, in particular, the office supports inter-agency processes such as the High-Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP), the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG), UN 2.0 or other inter-agency networks to advocate and ensure environmental sustainability is effectively integrated in the UN system operations and programmes. Under the overall guidance of the Director of the New York Office and the supervision of the Interagency Affairs Senior Programme Officer, and in close coordination with Divisions and Regional Offices, as appropriate, the consultant will undertake the following responsibilities: i. Follow-up of and contribute to interagency processes in the framework of UNEP collaboration with the UN system and individual entities, following the meetings and discussions, preparing Briefings for UNEP representation based on input from NYO and relevant Divisions; ii. Undertake analysis as needed of UNEP’s engagement with interagency partnerships, identifying synergies and complementarities, and making recommendations on how to take advantage of them; iii. Oversee outreach by facilitating meetings, research and preparations ahead of events of presentations, background documents and minutes; iv. Engage in the day-to-day activities of the Interagency team and the wider UNEP New York Office on related workstreams as required.Qualifications/special skillsMaster’s degree or equivalent in public administration, business administration, management, law, economics or a closely related area with substantial coursework in sustainable development, social and environmental nexus, social issues or similar areas. Strong experience with the UN system mechanisms and interagency collaboration is desired. A Bachelor’s degree plus at least two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree. A minimum of five years of accumulated work experience in international development, strategic planning and advocacy on sustainable development Experience in processes at the UN and/or international organizations, including experience with policy research and analysis and network coordination. Graphic presentations; Prezi or similar tools to create compelling data visualizationLanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
