Managing and processing of research data have emerged in recent years as increasingly important areas for research and knowledge development. At the UiB IT division’s product line for sensitive data and LabIT , there is currently a permanent position available related to the development and management of solutions for processing and storing sensitive research data (SAFE) and data generated by scientific laboratory equipment (LabIT). SAFE is UiB’s so-called ‘trusted research environment’ and currently serves more than 500 users within a wide range of disciplines, such as medicine and health, psychology, social sciences, and arts. Lab-IT is a solution that offers networking, storage/backup, and remote access for advanced scientific instruments such as microscopes at UiB. We also contribute to several national and international infrastructure projects, supported by, among others, the Research Council of Norway, the Directorate for e-health, the EU, and EOSC / European Open Science Cloud.

The UiB IT division is one of the largest IT environments in Western Norway. The division aims to be digitally leading and delivers a broad spectrum of IT services in development, operations, management, and user support. We are a knowledgeable and engaged organization with participation in exciting activities within the entire UiB operation and with extensive contact with users at the university. We have a great diversity of technologies, skills, and nationalities.

The IT division has about 110 employees, in addition to apprentices and part-time employed students. We emphasize continuous improvement with Lean methodology and use the ITIL framework for organizing service deliveries. The department has a productbased approach to all deliveries. Responsibilities

In this job, you will be part of the IT division’s product line for sensitive data and LabIT. The product line currently consists of six people developing and operating services for research. You will collaborate with other engineers, researchers, and other employees both within and outside the UiB IT division, including users from most faculties and institutes at UiB and beyond. For this position, we are eager to get in touch with both experienced and recently graduated candidates.

The main tasks of this position will be to further develop and operate solutions in SAFE for the collection and processing of sensitive research data, such as personal sensitive data from health registries, population studies, genomic analyses, various types of questionnaires, and video recordings.

Other tasks may include:

  • Developing secure solutions for data transfer to and from SAFE.
  • Actively contributing to the development of products in collaboration with other engineers and users / researchers.
  • Automating operations and services for sensitive research data.
  • Continuous improvement of all services provided by the product line.
  • Documentation of services and procedures.
  • Contributing to other deliveries from the product line.
  • Contributing to the further development of the product areas at the section and the wider professional environment at the IT department.
  • Participating in relevant e-infrastructure projects locally, nationally, and internationally.

Qualifications and Characteristics

  • Programming competence in Python, JS, PHP.
  • Experience with DevOps on Linux, such as Docker, Gitlab CI/CD, Ansible, and Shell.
  • Experience with databases, such as MariaDB/MySQL, PostgreSQL.
  • Experience in building and using Rest APIs is desirable.
  • Experience with systems integration and automation.
  • Good technical understanding of both application development processes and frameworks.
  • Ability to understand the user needs.
  • For the position of chief engineer, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree or engineering education from a university or college, or equivalent qualifications obtained through relevant practice and/or sufficient post-graduate education is required.
  • For the position of senior engineer, the requirement is a master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent qualifications obtained through relevant practice and/or sufficient post-graduate education is required.

  • For a successful candidate without knowledge of Norwegian language it will be required to take and successfully pass at least level 2 of the Norwegian language course at UIB within 2 years.

  • Position as higher engineer (code 1087) with a salary range from NOK 604,900 to NOK 692,400 or senior engineer (code 1181) from NOK 646,000 to NOK 759,100 before taxes. depending on qualifications. For particularly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered.
